WAVES - DODGERS PULL OFF A BLOCKBUSTER DEAL

ALLEN & RIDER TO Miami....McEWING & OZZIE TO LA!!!!

BIG TRADE IS THE TALK NOW!!!

Most insiders involved in this deal to any degree can tell you with 100% certainty that it would not have come off without the persistence and patience of Miami GM Pens.

Sources said that the Dodger front office, almost to a man, and the team as well, has been in a deep funk since the failed three team trade and the fiasco series that followed with the Cardinals that was then followed up by two really awful efforts by the team.

Pen had a deal worked out with Los Angeles that somehow got mis-sent or lost on the wire, and the over sensitive Dodger group reacted with rancor, cancelled the deal, and along with it sent a note to Pens that, had he not had a thick skin and kept his poise, would certainly have brought the whole thing to a crashing halt.

However, he did remain calm, did reestablish contact, and managed to work with his counterparts until cooler heads prevailed.

Now the only thing that remains to be seen is which side will get more from the deal.

Several big name players are changing addresses and uniforms as a result.

Here are the specifics. You decide.

First the Dodgers get two time All Star catcher Ozzie Jones.

Jones is having an off season for him this year, but compared to what the "waiver wire scrape heap gang" the Dodgers have used thus far this season that is a non-issue.

Along with Jones, the Dodgers also get starter Marcus McEwing (2-4 3.61) to add to their already impressive starting rotation in the fifth spot.

Outfielder Mike Smith is expected to take up the slack for the traded slumping star Arlis Allen when and if rookie Jose Julio-Cruz comes back to earth.

Los Angeles plans to plug shortstop Elmer Stubbs in as Rider's replacement and add pitcher Jim Clark to their bullpen in an as yet undecided role.

The reason for that is Mike Stoviak has been pressed into service to start the next game as big Rodgers Smithson, the scheduled starter, was included in the deal.

Smithson, 0-2 in two starts with Los Angeles, had a short stay in LA. He was acquired by the Dodgers, with closer Danny Slattery, from New York, in the Jim Griner deal.

Smithson's best season was 1950, when he was 5-4 w/a 5.45 ERA in 13 starts w/NY. He is the type of pitcher who if he ever masters his control problems would dominate.

But what Miami was really after(and got) were shortstop Andre Rider, outfielder Arlis Allen and veteran pitcher Doug Pickering. They are players who bolster the roster as a whole and improve chances if winning in the future.

Allen is a .311 career hitter, who like Ozzie Jones, has had an off season thus far, but is not old in a baseball sense, and can easily rebound and give the Waves a formidable outfield once their regular centerfielder, Ebba Kimble, returns from the disabled list.

Rider will fit right in with the fine outstanding Miami infield.

Along with Bill Zettlein 1b, Larry LaGrow 2b, and Bump Rogue, he will form an a rated group backed up by Happy Patton and Tom Escobar.

Poor Ted Boyd, a very good hitting first baseman, also came in the deal (maybe sadly for him) He may have anted to go elsewhere).

Although he has put up outstanding numbers in limited playing time with the Dodgers (.281 batting average 1 homerun 51 RBI in 124 games) , he could never displace Milt Yelle.

Somehow he must feel jinxed as he now finds himself in a similar place behind Zettlein.

For pitcher Brian Pickering, a veteran of two LCS series with the Dodgers, this will be his fourth stop this season.

Pickering was involved in the reversed trade with Minnesota and was returned to Los Angeles by commissioner's orders. He is as a result now donning a Miami uniform and hopes that his worn out suit case can be tossed and he'll stay awhile.

At least these former Dodger players will find it a bit more tranquil down in Florida in many ways.
