hi everyone

March 26, 2015 at 12:43PM View BBCode

this is my first single season league in a while but I've been playing extensively in the pay leagues since they started. I'm going to be trying some new strategy ideas here this time around.

if anyone is new to this and has any questions, please feel free to ask. I'm happy to be as much help as I can, if people want.

Hello Dirtdevil, Have read some of your other posts, much info.. How do you feel about playing players out of position? Especially with regards to LB? For ex., starting a OLB at MLB because of superior tackling and run cover skills than other LB on my roster? Or playing a TE at Wr? Thanks for the help!

I play guys out of position all the time. there's no need to even think twice about the LB move. the TE/WR is also common, although they do take a bit if an EXE hit. personally, I always play guys where I think their skillset fits best. if that's not the one on their card, i'm not worried.

pretty cool, i like it so far, i've got some questions ;) so there are only 3 offensive formations and 2 defensive? No 4-wide/spread, no 3-4s or dimes?

no info on who's making tackles, or pressuring the QB on D?

is there a way to get a certain player more involved offensively? small sample obvi, the guy i think is my best WR (and is 1st on depth) had 3 targets, while the guy across from him got 7. Is that a function of matchups, does the FL generally get more looks than the SE, what is it...

are the games always so low-scoring? no team scored more than 24 in Wk 1. Twice as many teams passed for under 100 yards as did over 200. is this kind of thing common?

so far, yes. chris has is working on some changes to how the game sim plays that will allow more formations and strategic flexibility.

not yet. tackle stats were active in beta for a while, which was pretty cool. but chris decided to wait until the system change was made to revisit them. I think that was why.

that is a good question with no fixed answer. there is no direct way to get a player more targets in that there's no button that says "make WR A the first option on X percentage of pass plays". it is a function of matchups and also of what strategies the offence is using. it one WR is being blanketed by a top CB, then the QB will go elsewhere. if your team throws deep a lot and your top WR isn't very fast, then he won't be open downfield as much as he would be in short sets. it's kind of a feel process right now.

no. I suspect that many teams have not yet set their offensive packages or their rosters.

awesome, thanks. i noticed a thread on Beta football from 2011 where Chris mentions a couple of these things, so i'm guessing it's not changing anytime soon. he is a slow one, my WR, just B speed. he got 10 targets in today's game though...man that was an ugly game, ha. 19 punts, 16 penalties, and 8 turnovers.

so how do you evaluate defensive players?

well for example, my team has no MLBs on the roster. looks like we've been using [url=http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=3326283]this guy[/url] there. i just noticed he's barely worse at ILB (B+) than OLB (A-) so I guess he'll be ok, but how can I tell whether or not he's doing the job?

the glib (and true) answer is by seeing how well other teams run the ball against you. my first piece of advice is that LBs are largely interchangeable. OLB can play ILB/MLB well and vice-versa. it's the skills that matter, not the position listing. if you have three good OLB and one bad ILB you're far better off playing the three good guys rather than being a slave to the position listings.

it's also my opinion from playing for a while that LB is probably the least important and least understood position in the sim. partly because there just aren't any good metrics for evaluating them. it's largely pick the guys with the skills you value and hope for the best.

that makes it weirdly interesting in a way, to have to infer the data. it's primitive technically, but maybe more fun to not have it spelled out for us. if middle runs are consistently gaining 5 yards, it's probably the DTs, if they're regularly getting stuffed or busting long then it might be the MLB.

that's how I feel about it. it being less cut and dried makes it feel more real, somehow. i don't want it spoon-fed to us because that's one of the things i dislike most about baseball. here there are many different ways to build and win and so just as many more legitimate differences opinion on player values. I seem to be in the minority though, or perhaps part of a quiet majority.

dirt i really appreciate your help, but i don't think sim football is the game for me. i legitimately totally forgot to check in for a day or 2, safe to say I'm not really enjoying it. maybe if i can get myself unemployed again someday, but i guess it's too much to get into right now.

you or anyone you know ever experiment with going nuts on 2-pt conversions? i turned them up as much as possible and have converted 7-of-8.

I've played with a few guys who have. the results have been mixed. I don't think anyone has ever sustained anything close to 7-8. generally though, guys who have been good with offences have had good luck with it and guys who aren't good don't. I have won at least one sim bowl by consistently stopping an opponent who kept going for two and I know the same guy has won at least two with the extra points from doing it.
