The Boston Red Sox learned of their new ownership change shortly before they played out in Anaheim. it was announced that former player, coach and owner of the old St Louis Browns Johnny Couch and a group of business partners had purchased the Boston American League Franchise and had immediately given the franchise back it's old it name; Red Sox. Other changes are apparently happening as well.
Red Sox 2 Anaheim 1
The team then played one of it finest games of the season defeating home standing Anaheim 2-1 in 10 innings. All Star Tom Perez singled in the top of the first inning. He stole second. The Red Sox loaded the bases with no outs on a walk and a hit batsman. Chris Jones rapped into a 4-6-3 double play that scored Perez.
That run held up until the ninth inning as starters Johnny Prosser for Boston and Dutch Colbern both settled in and white washed the opposition.
In the ninth Chaz Roe replaced Prosser and trouble ensued right away.
B.J. Ricketts, and pinch hitter Robert Koosman, both singled, putting runners on first and third. Dave Jarvis sacrifice to center field tied the score.
In the top of the tenth the Red Sox struck for their second run on a Manny Macado home run.
Roe, possibly after several of his teammates "encouraged" him not to blow it a second time, worked a scored bottom of the tenth to put the win in the win column for Boston.
The Boston team now makes the long trip back to the east coast where it will host Kansas City and Minnesota in a six game home stand. It is then that the manager and coaching staff will learn of their fates as far as jobs are concerned.
None of them seemed optimistic of being in uniform when Boston takes the field at home next. Players also had concerns as to who might be traded or released as long time starter Yo Yo Smith was.

Game of the Day
Mets 1 Minnesota 0
The Mets ran their winning streak to six games and have won seven of ten. Their lead in the American League is but two games due to Seattle continuing to be hot as well. The Sharks are in fact hotter than the Mets and have pick up a win in eight of their last ten and two in a row.
So in Minnesota where the Mets have been getting good pitching and timely hitting the Mets felt the hot breath of the Sharks swarming after them entering this game.
This one was a dandy.
Jerry Ford of the Mets and Minnesota's Jack Heron put on a pitching clinic surviving pratfall and certain disasters with uncanny aplomb.
The proof in in the describing but even in doing so the artistry of the game is almost impossible to match and impossible to reproduce in mere prose. But anyway...
On Jerry Ford's first pitch of the game Franklin Starr drilled a one hopper to luckless first baseman Dale Fondy, {i.e. if he hits a line drive it caught.. if he hits a blooper it's caught.. it one is hit to him...he boots it.....}.
And with Starr on Ford walks the second hitter Brian Rivers to stir the locals into an anticipatory lather of his impending collapse.
Ford responded like a Cadillac.
Martin Manning flied weakly to left fielder Jerry Sutherland in his track to make the catch.
Aaron Peters hit the ball on one hop to second baseman Ray Wakefield whose toss to shortstop Mark Weis at second and the relay to first was perfect for a 4-6-3 inning ending double play.
There was more great defense to come in this game.
Heron set the Mets down in order with seeming ease in the bottom of the first.
Nick Lande' singled to put the Minnesota lead off man on for the second consecutive inning.
Ford once again withstood the assault. Rich Fink fouled out to Kenny Fuller in foul territory near the stands. And as before Ford's sinker induced the pitcher's best friend a double play. This one was identical to the first, Wakefield, Wise and Lundy to end the inning.
New York remained hitless until Sutherland lead off the 5th with a single. Fondy was robbed of a hit by Manning at second and Weis' smash up the middle was knocked down by Heron and he was denied a hit. Catcher John Cozart walked but Ford fanned to end the first Met mini-threat.
Ford pitched around two more infield fielding errors in the 5th by Wakefield and 6th by Weis to keep it scoreless.
Wilson Rauntzhan singled in the sixth but was cut down attempting to steal by catcher Brian Rivers.
There were no runs scored in the eight inning but it was an eventful frame from beginning to end.
In the Minnesota half Brett Kaufman struck out to begin it well for the Mets. Then their prospects improved when Abe Rothstein pinch hit for Heron (7 innings 2 hits 0 runs 2 walks 6 strikeouts), removing him from the game. A positive in the minds of both the Mets and every fan in attendance.
Rothstein meanwhile was batting a cool .417. So after realizing this, and seeing him hit a routine fly to Sutherland in left the fans took a deep breath.
The third out was going to prove to be too elusive for Ford this time out Franklin Starr, already on base twice, before on a hit and an error, doubled this time, to decrease his popularity even more in New York.
That was the end of the line for Ford (7.2 innings 3 hits 0 runs 1 walk 3 strike outs).
Charlie Edmondson was summoned to get one out; Brian Rivers.
Rivers grounded out to third.
In the New York eighth more drama.
Weis opened the frame with a booming double. Fitzgerald went to his bench for offense.
Brian Cockrell a very dependable pinch hitter, hit for catcher John Cozart, and popped up to Fink at short.
Another pinch hitter, Rob Johnson, hit for the pitcher Edmondson. Johnson, on a hot streak, singled to left. Aaron Peters fielded the ball quickly and made a accurate throw to the cut off man second baseman Manning who relayed it to catcher Rivers on the fly and in time to get the sliding Weis at the plate and deny the run!
The top of the ninth proved to be the pivotal inning for the Mets. Based on the results thus far this season, almost any battle of the bullpens will be dominated by these Mets.
Wade Strickland, yet another of the long line of good pitchers residing in that pen was called on to work the ninth. Things most certainly did not begin well for Mr. Strickland on this occasion.
Martin Manning can not remember the last hit he had against Strickland drilled a single on the first pitch he saw. Suddenly Strickland who hardly ever walks anyone walked two batters in a row Peters and Lande') to load the bases with no one out.
But this was the game where no one could apparently score a run..ever. Rich Fink and Thad Keyser both struck out when a run was possible with contact and with two outs Brett Kauffman bounced one back to Strickland who lobbed it to the catcher for the force at home ending and escaping from an impossible situation.
Would anyone get a run?
Jared Howell came in for Minnesota.
Ray Wakefield has struggled at times this season,, but his .276 batting average is on the rise, not decline. He singled as he often does in situation like this.
On a three-two pitch to Wilson Rauntzhan he was running. Rauntzhan swung and missed a breaking pitch. Rivers throw to second to get Wakefield was late....but not by much. Rich Fink felt that it wasn't late at all but his opinion did not matter in the long run.
As Fink probably thought the play might decide the game. it did. Angel Cardenas singled on a 2-1 pitch to left. Wakefield broke off second quickly and came around third as Peters came up throwing to get another runner at the plate.
This time his throw and the runner arrived at the same time. Rivers caught the ball as Wakefield slide hard into him. The ball popped out of his mitt to make the call elementary.
Mets win! 1-0.
Brutally tough game to lose for Minnesota...Great win for the Mets.
