The FQL is rapidly winding down to it final days and although nothing has been set in stone (clinched) much has become clear as to who is most likely to advance on into the post-season.

In the National League Montreal, only recently staggering noticeably, and being hotly pursued by a red hot Miami Monsters team, has stayed the course like the experienced championship team they are and have been.

Winners of six straight now after they defeated San Diego out in beautiful San Diego, 4-3. It was their 48th victory of the season, six better than Miami.

Montreal scored all it's runs in the first inning and starting pitcher Vic Fein (WP 6-1) and reliever Phil Stepping (save number 2) made them stand up.

Miami lost it's third consecutive game losing 9-6 to Milwaukee.

Chicago has not been eliminated, although they are 11 back of Montreal, they are five behind Miami, and with Miami's struggles the door might swing open for them if they continue to win down the stretch.

Chicago shut out Atlanta 4-0. Norm Whitehouse (4-5 went 8.2 innings and needed last help from Gus Land to seal the deal.

New York Madmen stopped their skid with a 5-1 win over Pittsburgh.

====================================

Over in the American League New York and Baltimore continue to stare each other down. One will finish first and the other second unless something unworldly happens.

This is important because of the way each team dominates on it's home field. New York is 28-8 at Shea Stadium and Baltimore is 27-7 on it's home field.

The Mets continued to play well on it's nine game road trip winning 13-4 in Boston.

Mike Smith's complete game win ran his season's record to 12-1 and his ERA is now 2.76.

Ray Wakefield (5031), Mark Weis (5230), and a resurgent Angel Cardenas (5234) had nine of New York's 16 hits in the game.

The Mets set a record with 10 stolen bases in the game without being caught. League leader Jerry Sutherland stole his 29th, Rob Johnson stole 2 (9), Ron Speer 2 (12), Dale Fondy 2 (13), and Angel Cardenas 3 (16).

As a team New York now has 155 stolen bases, 17 more than the next best team Baltimore.

Baltimore kept pace with New York downing Seattle 5-4 on Fast Freddie's walk off single in the bottom of the 9th.

Anaheim 9-4 over Minnesota and Kansas City 8-3 over Washington.

Washington is now 4-66 and has lost 14 straight.
