Pittsburgh 5 Masters 3

Pittsburgh sweeps Masters...tied for first

It was an interesting series on several fronts. Pittsburgh scored 10 runs on 25 hits and swept the series, but Montreal's bullpen threw exactly one-third of an inning and walked only three batters in the three games.

Rookie reliever Steve Gakeler pitched two innings and was credited with wins in game one and game three.

Mark Kramer saw action in all three games working the 9th in each and earning 3 saves.

Justin Hyers of the Pirates, and Jack Connolly and Jimmy Howe of Montreal each hit two homers in the series. Joe Kelly, and Greg Mathews and all hit one.

The Pirates, who run the bases with reckless abandon, were 0-5 in steal attempts. Montreal was 2 for 4.

In this contest Pittsburgh's John Taylor hit his 4th homer of the season in the first inning and Jerry Thompson hit his 5th in the second to give the Pirates a quick 2-0 lead.

Jack Connolly hit his second of the series and 5th of the campaign in the 5th inning to cut the Pirate lead to 2-1.

Jimmy Howe hit his second of the series in the 6th with a man on to give Montreal it's only lead 3-2.

That lead was short lived. Hyers double scored Stoviak to tie it in the bottom of the 6th. Hyers was 6 for 10 in the series with 2 doubles, a triple and 2 homers with 4 driven in.

Danny Hockett faced two batters in the eighth; Chet Narogan and Yogi Knoll, both singled to bring his evening to a close. Rookie Steve Gakeler, winner of game one, made his second appearance of the series.

The rookie right hander performed like a seasoned veteran in the pressure situation.

He retired Howe on a fly to right, walked Mateo, got Connally on a slow bouncer to short that advanced Mateo into scoring position, and then got the third out getting pinch hitter Jack Ehmke on a ground ball to second baseman Steve Wise, a rookie making his debut. Wise threw the batter out. in the bottom of the 8th the Pirates took a step to finish what they had begun in the first two games by pushing across two runs.

After Stoviak fanned, Joe Kelly singled.. red hot hitting Justin Hyers flied to deep center field....Pinch hitter Greg Mathews in a platoon situation now at second batted for Thompson and hit a two run pinch hit homer to give Pittsburgh their final 5-3 lead.

The only thing left to do was far Mark Kramer to close it out in the 9th. Kramer did just that in all three games allowing only a single walk and fanning two.

Third place Philadelphia failed to pick up ground on Montreal by dropping the third game of it's series with disappointing Brooklyn.

Brooklyn, 7-17 this season and in need of a win of any kind got an impressive one thanks to Bob Mackanin's three hit complete game shut out of the Fitins.

Shortstop Johnny Brouhard had three hits and all were important to Brooklyn. Brouhard had run scoring singles in the bottom of the first and second innings and a double in the 6th inning when he came around and scored on a single by Jim Young.

Said Brouhard,"This was a good day for me. I needed something positive to occur and I give thanks for the good fortune I encountered today."

LA Stars 6 Arizona 4

LA is another team that was due for good fortune. Former Pirate Art Giallomdardo 3-1 got the win and Dean Hamric, author of a master peace in his last outing could only go 1.2 innings getting tagged for 5 hits and 5 runs. He was the losing pitcher now 3-1.

Thorneberry hit a solo shot for Arizona, Hank Secory and Mike Heidrich clubbed two run shots.
