OPENING DAY

Toronto 3 Baltimore 1

Opening Day in Toronto saw new faces, new ownership and new enthusiasm for the coming season. After finishing in last in 1950, the Indians drafted a 30 year old Japanease League veteran in the first round (first pick), and signed him to play in centerfield along side Tracy Walters and and Willie Douglas thus providing Tortonto with a first class starting outfield.

Pitching may be another strong point if the rest of the staff can provide anything close to the superaltive eight innings that starter Tommy Arlich contributed in the first game.

Arlich went 8 innings, surrendered 8 hits 1 run walked 2 and fanned 7. After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, giving up two singles that produced the run, Arlich stiffened and gave Baltimore only one more base hit the remainer of the game.

Toronto bats got him back even in the bottom of the 3rd.

Arlich, the starting pitcher, played a major role in the game tying rally, drawing a lead off walk from left hander David Brewer. Brewer compounded his problems by also walking rookie Ryuji Hidaka. Fabian Peters rapped into a thrid to second to first around the horn double play to cool the rally. Tracy Womack came through with a clutch two out run scoring double to tie the game 1-1.

Brewer took the loss. He logged 7 innings gave up 8 hits and 2 runs both earned. The 8 hits were manageble but the walks proved very intrumental in the scoring. Arlich and Hidaka received free passes in the 3rd and Mike Buchanan in the 6th.

Toronto took the lead in the 6th off Brewer. Womack continued to be a bee in Brewer's bonnet. This time, he singled as a lead off hitter. Brewer got the next two hitters out, but walked Mike Buchanan, and gave up a run scoring single to first baseman Bob Ostendorf that also put Toronto on top 2-1.

Womack capped off a memorable Opening Day with his first home run in the 8th off right handed relief pitcher Johnny Ruble.

The final score was 3-1. Ted Plank worked a scoreless 9th for his first save of the season.
