Angels flying high...win 5th straight..take over first

Anaheim swept their old rivals the Texas Outlaws 3-2 at home for their fifth consecutive win. The victory enabled the Angels to take advantage of a rar loss by Tampa Bay to assume first place all alone.

The series with the Outlaws was a spirited well played set.

In game one score was 8-3 Angels.

Nap Carter pitched a complete game, his third of the season. Carter allowed 11 hits and 3 runs.

The offensive load in the game was picked up by Brooks Lowrey with three hits, a run scored and 3 RBIs.

Game two starter Bob Debusky was knocked out of the game in the 6th inning. Gordie Branch took over and worked 2.2 innings striking out three. He picked up the win.

Jack Wasdell picked up his 14th save of the year when he struck out two of the three hitters he faced.

Billy Henley proved to be the Angel hitting star in this one with two hits including his 7th home run.

Larry Pickett had a marvelous effort in the final of the series; 9 innings pitched 9 hits allowed 2 runs allowed (both earned), 2 walks and 9 strikeouts.

Pickett dueled most of the game with Monk Ferrell who left after 7 innings 7 hits 2 runs 4 walks and 9 strikeouts. Walt Harlow hit a game tying homerun in the 8th off Ferrell.

Al Turner took over and allowed the winning run to score when Lloyd Leinhauser singled to right driving in Danny Hall with two outs.

The win was of importance because it allowed the Angels to take over sole possession of first place after Tampa Bay suffered a rare loss.

The LA Stars won 3-1 over TB in 12 innings.

Los Angeles tied the game 1-1 in the sixth inning on a Beldon Beltran srun scoring single off Bob Gerheauser.

Gerheauser (6.2 innings 7 hits 1 run, and Joe Fanwell went even deeper in the game, 9.1 innings 6 hits 1 run (unearned.)

Butch Cress suffered the loss. Cress allowed 2 hits and a run in just one-third of an inning.

Ewald Sloan pitched the bottom of the 12th for his 10th save.

Kansas City 9 Baltimore 4

The Monarchs drubbed Baltimore 9-4. Dutch Merello went 9 innings allowed 8 hits 4 runs walked 6 fanned 9 for the win. (5-2).

SS Gene Pastorio had three hits including his 5th homerun. Bob Yelding hit his first and Chick Gehrig his 8th.

Sterling Tremie hit number six and Joe Gonzalez his first for Baltimore.
