TIGERS 5 OAKLAND 1
Roberto Serna is proving to be quite the handful both on the mound and with the bat. Serna as a starting pitcher is 5-4 with a 4.11 ERA in 13 games having pitched 85.1 innings allowed 75 hits 41 runs (32 earned) walked 32 and struck out 64. Additionally Cerna has flourished with the bat, hitting a robust .394 in those 13 games (13 for 33) with 1 double 5 runs batted in.
In Cerna's last start the native of Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, went the distance allowed four hits and one run (unearned) walked two struck out eight batters.
Serna singled to start the second inning and Larry Foster followed with his fifth home run of the season off Marv Miller to make the score 2-0 Detroit.
Detroit struck again in the sixth. Casey Wheeler took over from Miller with one out in the inning and did not retire any of the three batters he faced. Mike Simpson and Tony Cooke singled and both scored on a double by red hot hitting first baseman Don Baker.
Right hander Bob Runnels warmed up and came quickly to the rescue. Runnels retired the first two hitters he faced but then allowed Serna's second hit of the game that drove in the final run giving the Tigers a 5-0 lead.
Dad Fannin hit a bases empty homerun in the bottom of the sixth to spoil the shutout and make the final score 5-1.
Detroit is now 27-29 eight games out of first place but only two games behind Minnesota (lost four), Anaheim (lost one), and Oakland (lost four).
Toronto 4 Boston 2
First place Toronto was a 4-2 winner over Boston. Clyde Braun (6-4) was the winning pitcher, Gary Voss (3-5) took the loss. Bob Sprague struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his 12th save.
Braun went eight strong innings allowed seven hits and two runs walked three and struck out nine.
Rusty Spencer hit his ninth homerun of the season (34 RBIs) in the eighth inning for Toronto.
Alfonso Booker hit a two run homerun for Boston in the ninth off Braun to spoil the shutout.
Cleveland 6 Minnesota 1
Cleveland scored four runs in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. Moike Donovan reached on an error, Ben Schneck walked, andHarry York singled ahead of Chuck Spilman grand slam home run off Lamar Lanahan (LP 6-5)
Felix Harris ( 4-3) was the winning pitcher going seven innings allowing just two hits and one run.
Baltimore 4 Anaheim 1
Baltimore also jumped on the opposing pitcher in the first inning for a lead they later let slip away scoring three times on a three run homer by John Elsh.
Minnesota chipped away and tied the game 3-3 on a Johnnie Beck single in the fourth and two more runs in the six.
Baltimore win the game in the bottom of the ninth on a wild throw by catcher Dick Campbell to third on a steal attempt by Elsh who had walked, moved to second on another walk and stolen third base. Elsh scored the winning run on the throw.
