Toronto-Detroit Series

Toronto takes two of three to hold on to two game lead.

Toronto now leads second place Kansas City by two games and third place Detroit by five in the American League pennant race.

Detroit play host to the Sky Larks who have gone 7-3 in their last ten games.

Detroit rewarded their fans with a 2-1 win in game one. Game two was a fourteen inning marathon that Detroit tied up in the bottom of the ninth inning with a run off Toronto closer Joe Holdsworth.

It was Holdsworth's third blown save. Frank Nunez pitched four scoreless inning in relief for the win for Toronto.

In the top of the fourteenth Chick Felske walked lead off batter Stan Michaels. Jerry Billings forced Michaels at second for the first out.

Pat Welker took over for Detroit on the mound.

Billings put himself in scoring position by stealing second and scored on a single by Pat Gonzalez.

Nunez finished off a sterling outing for him, allowing one hit, in the ninth, but getting the three outs with no further scoring.

in game three Bill Sorrell, 5-3 now, out pitched Detroit's left handed ace, Bill Funk, (the losing pitcher 8-3).

Toronto jumped on top in the top of the second after Funk struck out the first two batters.

Jerry Billings stroked a two out single and stole second.

Charlie Sprowl came through with a run scoring single to make it 1-0 and pitcher Bill Sorrell helped his own cause with his bat driving in Sprowl with run number two.

Detroit pulled one of those run back in thev third on a run scoring double by Kevin Monroe.

Shortstop Paul Morgan hit his 11th home run of the season with a man abourd in the sixth to make it 4-1.

Rance Steirer's RBI single for Detroit in the sixth made it 4-2.

Both teams came up with four run innings in the eighth.

Toronto smacked Detroit reliever Brickyard Barker all over the park. Three consecutive singles by Morgan, Billings and Sprowl got the first run in and left runners at the corners.

Arlie Nash replaced Barker.

Frank Wright's double drove in two runs (Billings and Sprowl). Sorrell bunted Wright to third where he then scored on the second out in the inning a ground out by Sanberg.

Detroit came back to within two runs, 8-6, on a two run double by Steirer off Sorrell, who departed for Charlie Finch.

Steirer scored on Joe Egan's triple. Cherokee Johnson followed with a sac fly to close out the scoring.

Holdsworth made up for his blown save in game one by securing this one for Sorrell with a scoreless ninth, his 25th save.
