Toronto - Boston Series and AL Game Summeries

Lowly Boston is seventeen games behind first place Toronto, but of late the Bosox have played much better baseball, taking a road series in Cleveland two games to one, and then coming into Toronto to put up a successful fight in game one of that series.

Boston started Manny Womack (WP 6-6), a right hander who stifled the Sky Lark offense for 6.2 innings allowing only three hits. Bill Molina (1.1 2 hits 3 strikeouts) and Sammy Goodwin (3rd save, 1 inning 1 walk, 1 strikeout) gave Boston stout relief pitching to finish off a spirited effort by the visiting team.

Catcher Joe Gomez, one for four in the game, drove in two of Boston's three runs. Gomez singled in a run in the two-run third inning. Armando Johnson's sacrifice fly drove in the second run. Gomez drove in a run in the 5th inning with an infield ground out.

Game two was another positive effort for Boston, although the home team matched them run for run through nine innings and prevailed in this back and forth 10 inning affair 6-5.

Boston got off to a rousing start in this game thinks to two first inning errors by Toronto and a two run home run by John Wright (9th) that put them ahead 3-0.

Joe Castillo, acquired from Fan Francisco after the trading deadline, picked up his first win for Toronto, and upped his record to 3-1 on the season, with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Bobby Grabowski went seven strong innings for Toronto (3 hits 3 runs).

None of the runs off Grabowski were earned due to two first inning errors by Toronto on left fielder Mark Sanberg and third baseman Pat Gonzalez.

Both players would atone for their miscues.

Toronto promptly got one run back in the bottom of the first. Boston returned the favor an allowed catcher Bill Davenport to reach on an error and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Sanberg.

Sanberg walked to lead off the sixth. Charlie Sprowl reached on an error by shortstop Wayne Euler spelling the end for Ozzie Edwards (5IP 2H 2R (0 earned) 3 walks 1 strikeout).

Sammy Goodwin entered the fray.

Goodwin struck out Bauer, walked Pat Gonzalez to load the bases. Sanberg scored on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Billings. (3-2_

Toronto tied the game 3-3 in the eighth.

Pat Gonzalez singled and scored on a pinch hit single by Jim Chapman.

Boston scored twice to take a 5-3 lead in the top of the ninth off Charlie Finch. Manny Ramirez hit his ninth home run of the season. Ian Thomas followed with a single and scored on Jeff Sackinsky's one out triple.

Key pitching change for Toronto; Joe Castillo for Finch.

Castillo got the final two outs and stranded Sackinsky at third.

Toronto rallied once again in the bottom of the ninth.

Left hander Damaso Edwards. was on the mound for Boston.

Edwards walked Stan Michaels and Mark Sanberg (who had three walks in the game) Charlie Sprowl singled.

Boston center fielder followed up his throwing out a runner to end the sixth inning by throwing out speedy Michaels at the plate in this inning.

Sprowl stopped at first then stole second base putting runners at second and third for Bobby Bauer. Bauer's single drove in both runners to tie the gamer 5-5.

Toronto had a chance to go ahead.

Bauer stole second. Pat Gonzalez bounced to shortstop. Catcher Mitch Jacobson singled and Bauer was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Manny Ramirez, Boston's third assist throwing a runner out at the plate in the game.

Castillo set Boston down in order in their half to set up Toronto with a chance to win it in their half.

Pinch hitter Trevor Corriden and Bill Manders singled to center field off Edwards. Corriden went to third.

Edwards walked Michaels to load the bases with no outs. Sanberg's single to left brought in the winning run.

After two close competitive games the final was a 8-1 blow out for the home team. Toronto assumed a four game lead in the American League.

Tom Stone (2-1) made his fourth start since being recalled from the minors and went 8 innings allowed 7 hits no runs walked three and struck out four.

Charlie Finch, who pitched in all three games of the series worked the ninth.
The first four hitters in the Toronto lineup had nine of the thirteen hits put up by Toronto.

Lead-off man Stan Michaels went two for five, scored one run, LF Mark Sanberg had an outstanding series going four for eight with four walks and a double, stolen base and two homeruns, went three for four, two homers, 1b Jerry Billings was three for four with a two run homer and RF Charlie Sprowl went one for three and scored a run.

In other American League action Seattle took out Baltimore 6-1.

Jose Lima is now 10-3 after going nine innings allowing three hits and one run. Brian Asselstein went two for four to pace the offense scoring two and driving in two.

Detroit's Jeff Diaz (8-3) shut out Cleveland 2-0 on three hits over eight innings and Ron Ball took care of the ninth inning for his 19th save.

Second place Kansas City has lost three straight after a 3-2 loss to the Angels.

Kansas City rallied for two late on a John Trucks two run homerun, but fell one run short.

Doyle Collins two run single was the big hit for the Angels.
