Toronto lowers magic number to four with 7-4 win

There are eight games left in the season and the Toronto Sky Larks own a five game lead in the American League after opening a three game series in Cleveland with a 7-4 victory.

Kansas City and Cleveland are both five games back tied for the second place Wild Card spot in the playoffs. Seattle is six off the pace and still has a shot at the playoffs. Baltimore seven back is all but eliminated is seven games back. All the other clubs have been mathematically eliminated.

Toronto won its third straight and seventh in its last ten with a hard fought 7-4 victory over Cleveland.

Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Toronto ace Mike Jones. Bud Buskey doubled with one out and scored on Mike Trouppe two-out triple.

Cleveland added on in the third inning when Wayne Daniels doubled and scored on Dave Ortiz single. Ortiz leads the league with 15 home runs and is tied with Seattle's Brain Asselstine with 55 runs batted in.

Trever Corriden got Toronto on the board in the fifth with his first home run this season. 2-1 Cleveland.

Cleveland used five pitchers in the game, Toronto four.

Mike Jones went six innings for Toronto six hits; three runs two walks seven strikeouts. No decision. Breuer, the winning pitcher, Frank Nunez and Joe Holdsworth followed.

Polish starter Fred Perez went six innings allowed five hits and two runs walked one and struck out four.

Toronto scored its second run off Perez in the sixth inning on a Pat Gonzalez single to cut the lead to 3-2.

Desi Atwood worked a perfect seventh inning and then gave way to Steve Perrine in the eighth.

Perrine, a right hander, ran into immediate trouble in the eighth.

Domingo Verbanic and Mark Sanberg singled putting runners on first and third with no one out.

Perrine's outstanding play on Pat Gonzalez' smash through the box prevented a run and left him facing Charlie Sprowl with runners on second and third with one out. Sprowl drove in both runners with a double putting Toronto in front for the first time 4-3.

Paul Rucker took over with two one out for Perrine and walked shortstop Paul Morgan. Bauer followed with a hit driving in Sprowl to make it 5-3 Toronto.

Cleveland got a run off Frank Nunez in the eighth inning to close to 5-4 on John Butcher's run scoring single.

Toronto put it on ice in the top of the ninth with two more runs off Rucker. Pinch hitter Bill Manders doubled and Verbanic walked.

Lefty Hunt took over for Rucker.

Sanberg singled, Manders scored. Verbanic to third.

Gonzalez doubled to right driving in Verbanic to make it 7-4 and Closer Joe Holdsworth nailed it down in the ninth inning for his 26th save, tops in the league.

Brickyard Barber, the third pitcher used by Detroit got the win (7-3). Ron Ball picked up his 20th save.

Seattle 7 Kansas City 3 Complete game for Denny McLain (7-3) Ralph Neal the loser, 6-7.

Tony Gwynn had four hits in five at bats.

Roberto Clemente hit his 12th home run.


In the National League the Cubs ken Cook shut out St. Louis 7-0 on three hits (10-3). Cook had seven strikeouts and walked four.

Cubs now have a six game lead over St. Louis and their magic number is reduced to only three.
