And Down the Stretch They Come!!!!!

In the American League the Toronto Sky Larks reduced their magic number for clinching the American league pennant to just two. Kansas City, six games behind Toronto, at this point is in second place by one game over Detroit.

Seattle and Baltimore still have fleeting chances. (I wrote Baltimore off yesterday as eliminated but was wrong.) Both are eight games out and on life support now.

Toronto 4 Cleveland 1 [14 innings]

It took the Sky Larks fourteen well pitched innings to outlast the stubborn Polish but in the end a stout effort by the Sky Lark bullpen was the difference.

The starting pitchers for this game were Joel Dodd for Toronto and Andreas Merriman for Cleveland. Both put forth outstanding efforts. Dodd went seven innings allowed five hits and just one run walked two and recorded only one strikeout.

Merriman likewise gave up just one run over seven innings. He gave up six hits walked three and struck out nine.

Toronto tallied its run in the second inning.

Mark Sanberg, batting a robust .322 for the season, bunted for a base hit leading off. Merriman walked Jerry Billings putting two on with no one out.

Merriman struck out the next two batters, Joe Beulow and Frank Wright, but the pitcher Joel Dodd came through with a run scoring single to put Toronto ahead 1-0.

Cleveland tied the game 1-1 in the fourth inning.

Bud Busky singled to right field leading off and John Butcher came through with a two out single to get the run in.

The score remained that way through the 13th inning.

Toronto's bull pen was outstanding. Lesli Daniels, one inning, AnDY Breuer 1.1 inning, Larry Brown 3.2 innings and Frank Nunez, filling in for the rested Joe Holdsworth closed the game out for his first save of the season.

The big inning was the bottom of the 14th for Toronto. With Ross Shook on the mound for Cleveland, Billings doubled to center field. Jim Egloff grounded to short, no advance. Catcher Bill Davenport doubled driving the run in easily.

Gary Olmo replaced Shook.

Pitcher Larry Brown batted for him self and struck out.

San Michaels tripled. Davenport scored. 3-1. Bobby Bauer tripled and Michaels scored to make the final 4-1.

EXTRA NOTE;

Editorial; During a pitching change in the bottom of the fourteenth inning for Toronto a clown resembling Bozo and a naked lady jumped on to the field in right field and proceed to lead a detail of Toronto's finest on a merry chase around the out field into the second base area and then back out towards before being apprehended.

The constabulary did think to provide a cover for as much of the obviously inebriated young ladies exposed area. The reaction of the Cleveland players on the field was surprising. Asked why he did not lend a hand, Cleveland right fielder Mike Hertz said, ''Honestly they ran behind me and I never saw a thing."

Center fielder John Butcher said, ''I'm getting married just after the season ends. I did not want my future bride to see me in the newspapers anywhere near a naked lady.

Left fielder Bud Busky may have had an even better reason. "I have hated clowns before and still do. That guy looked like a particularly evil clown so I ran the other way as fast as I could.''

In the opinion of this newspaper something must be done to prevent something like this from becoming a fad. Imagine a naked woman running onto the field and say kissing one of the players. it just might ruin his career.

The league must act and the slow leisurely procession by the police escorting her off the field wasn't impressive either since the clown was quickly ushered off to a cell.
