Detroit Free Press...October 2, 1950 AP.

Tigers finish ''in the money''.

Detroit finishes third (tied with Los Angeles and Boston), which means they will receive third place money from the World Series pool (split with three teams.)

Because Detroit went 19-10, and won 11 road games during the month, the Tigers were to be given a bonus by their ownership that, after their 9-5 victory over Los Angeles to take the series two out of three, was thought to be around $5,850 dollars per player.

We say ''were to be'' because the League Commissioner order the Studebaker Corporation to hold off on those bonus until a vote can be taken by league owners on the effect it might have on ''competitive balance.''

League owners with the exception of the Detroit owners will vote on the matter prior to the World Series. The Commissioner also said that each owners vote would be secret.

Detroit players were in no mood to discuss the matter as they prepared to leave Los Angeles. George Castillo (6-4) won the ''money game'' for Detroit going 8.1 innings giving up 10 hits five runs (four earned).

Detroit scored four times in the second inning. Catcher Joe Maloney (four hits including two home runs) opened with a single to right. Posada hit Ed Thorndyke with a pitch and Matt Brown's one out double scored Maloney.

pitcher George Castillo singled in Thorndyke. Brown scored on Gil MacConacle's ground out to third. Ray Sukeforth tripled in the final run for a 4-0 Detroit lead.

Maloney, singled in the third inning and hit two run home runs in the fourth and seventh innings. Second baseman Alex Kendall was on base for both blasts. Maloney finished with 11 on the
season.

Clint Murray wound up with 56 runs batted in tied for first in the AL with three others.

In the National League Houston and S. Louis wound up tied for first because St. Louis won its last three and Houston lost its last three/

Houston and St Louis played only nine games this season with winning the season's series five of the nine games.

Houston will have the home field advantage in the playoffs.

St. Louis defeated Pittsburg 2-1 to finish the season.

Pete Alba gave up two hits in the ninth inning that proved to be Pittsburgh undoing in a close affair.

Washington took the American League flag by two games over the Texas Owls.

Both teams finished the season on winning streaks. Washington won1-0 on the final day when Fred Ledee came up with only the third Warriors third hit off Boston's John Grater, a home run that won it 1-0.

Jesus Chervinko went the distance surrendering four hits and no runs. The win was Washington's fifth straight.

Texas won its seventh straight with a 7-4 win over New York.

Kevin Streif (10-4) took the win.

Roy Figueroa (StL) (10-4) and Larry Castner (Hou) will be game one starters in the NLCS.

Jeff Moore (4-7) of the Texas Owls and Washington's Charlie Rigney are the starters in the ALCS.
