Doc Edwards League pennant race and notes

Detroit 7 Washington 1

Art Neagle went the distance for Detroit's league best third complete game of the season. With the victory Detroit reached the five hundred mark at 6-6 one game out.

Neagle went nine innings, allowed five hits and one run walked two and struck out a season high twelve batters.

Catcher Monroe Davie said, ''Neagle was in command of his pitches. He was on the black and the plate umpire was even complimentary saying he could call this game blindfolded. I may have offended him by saying I thought that was how he called them all the time.''

Detroit's offense was hitting an anemic .229 going in and did much better scoring seven runs on eight hits. They put up a picket fence over the first four innings before breaking though with three runs in the fifth.

Charlie Rigney walked Matt Brown with one out in the first. Brown stole second and scored on Clint Murray's single. 1-0 Detroit.

Detroit made it 2-0 in the second.

Alex Kendall singled to center field, stole second and scored on Monroe Davies bouncer to third. 3-0 Detroit.

Dick Baecht led off the third with a single to left. Ed Thorndyke and Clint Murray walked to fill the bases. Braecht scored on a single by Roberto Beville. Thorndyke was thrown out at the plate by right field Mike Buckley.

Brown singled to left field and Beville homered in the fifth. 5-0 Detroit.

Ace Barfield replaced Rigney.

Alex Kendall homered off Barfield with a man on..7-0 Detroit.

Washington broke up Neagle's shutout with their lone run in the ninth.
