Giants 8 Montreal 2

At Montreal Expos Stadium.

San Francisco opened a three game series with the Montreal Expos with a 8-2 win in game one over the Expos.

The final score was deceptive because both pitchers pitched effectively into the eighth inning in a one in ball game. An error in the late going was costly to the Expos but their defense earlier in the game kept them in the game.

Montreal catcher Johnny Colon threw out five of six would be base stealers in the game and right fielder Jeff McGee threw out Gary Druhot at third base to end the third inning.

A double play started by San Francisco third baseman Jennings Martyn allowed Giants starting pitcher John Lindquist to escape the 5th inning unscathed.

Ken Skubeno started a scoring rally for the Giants with a single in the third. Skubeno scored on a single by catcher John Hoyt.

The Expos tied the game 1-1 in the 4th on a home run by Jim Binks.

San Francisco retook the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the 5th. Martyn doubled and scored on a base hit by John Sullivan.

Lindquist got the win for the giants (5-3) pitching allowing 1 run on three hits. Lindquist gave way to Pat Acosta in the eighth after he issued a two-out walk to Montreal's eight place hitter, shortstop Jim Pechiney and a single to pitcher homer Leonard.

Acosta got a key out retiring the only batter he faced, George Rajsich on a routine ground ball.

Leonard gave up a lead off single to Paul Bauman in the ninth. Baumann stole second but got a little too greedy and was thrown out trying to steal third by Colon (5th caught stealing for him in the game).

A two base throwing error relief pitcher Herb Erstad opened the flood gates to six runs in the inning to blow the game open.

Ken Skubeno doubled driving in Barnes. Erstad walked Jimmy Davenport and catcher Tom Mulligan singled in Skubeno. Phil Aurilia (2nd) hit a three run home off Erstad finishing him off.

Gary Druhot followed that with his third hit of the game, his first of the year.

Oscar Petagine's pinch hit home run off jing Salve in the bottom of the 9th made the final score 8-2.
