Washington Senators -- Cleveland Rockers

The Washington Senators have surprised their loyal following in the early going by jumping two games in front in the American League, a league they have historically supported from the bottom of the standings.

The Washington team has sported a team ERA of 3.66, 3rd in the league, and a team batting average of .257, which is 6th in the circuit.

To date the Senators have taken the first two games of their current series; 5-3 in game one and 2-1 in the second game.

In game one Right hander Jack Moolic improved to 4-0 going 7.1 innings allowed 6 hits and 2 runs, (1 earned) walked 2 struck out 7.

Jim Dimmel was the first man out of the bull-pen coming to Moolic's rescue in the 8th inning with one out when Milt Bobens reached on a two-base error by Washington right fielder Brian Donnelly.

Dimmel allowed a two-out double to Joe Widmer that scored Dobens and a single to Red Brown that drove in Widmer and made the score Washington 5 Cleveland 3.

Max Green took over in the 9th and struck out two of the three batters he faced to earn his 4th save.

Donnelly, who made the error, and Tom Hanyzewski both hit their first career home runs in the second inning.

Both were recently recall to add more punch to the lineup. neither is known as a glove man. Donnelly because of limited range and Hanyzewski because or an arm injury to his throwing arm is a converted shortstop who will be playing mostly first base.

Hanyzewski scored two runs in the game scoring the second time in the 4th on a sacrifice fly by pitcher Jack Moolic.

Washington then took game two 2-1.

Joe Widmer put Cleveland in front 1-0 with a single that sent Tige Myers in to score.

Bill Watson tied the game in the 4th inning with his 4th homer of the season.

The score was tied going into the bottom of the 9th when Washington scored the winning run off Bobby Dorcher (0-3).

Catcher Danny Murphy opened the inning with a single just out of the reach of Cleveland second baseman Tom lemon.

Good defense by Cleveland almost got them out of the inning.

First center fielder Joe Widmer robbed Donnelly of a possible extra base hit with an outstanding running catch deep in right center.

Daryl Boucher doubled sending Murray plate-ward with the possible winning run only to be thrown out by a perfect throw from right fielder Bret Hanley.

Jim Barren was not disheartened sending the ball on a line into the leftfield gap splitting the outfielders and driving in Bucher.

Chasing the Senators in the early going are Baltimore and Seattle.

Baltimore is tied for second despite losing their last two games.

Baltimore lost game one 5-4 in ten innings and game two 6-3 to Oakland.

Baltimore will send Jeff Krueger (1-1 5.29) against Oakland's Ed Santiago (0-2 5.84)

The Seattle Pilots are a more solid 16-13 having just even their series with Anaheim with a solid 8-3 win.

Adam Wainwright went 9 innings allowed 11 hits and 3 runs 2 walks 6 strikeouts. (4-1).

Catcher Sebastian Compton went 2-5 scoring two runs in the game, driving in two runs and stealing a base.

Frank ''Homerun'' Baker hit his 3rd homerun for Seattle in the 3rd inning with Compton on base.

Heinie Manuch's 8th inning double drove in two runs that upped the score to 7-1 and sealed it for Seattle.
