Seattle -- Los Angeles series

Game one in Los Angeles. Game number 100.

News of the day; The US government expressed great concern that Korea would soon be lost to the Communists. The United States has hastily deployed troops to South Korea as North Korea has continued to strengthen its forces along the border and threatens to invade the south.

President Truman committed 400 Infantry under LTC Charles B. Smith of the 1st Battalion 21 Regiment of the 24th Infantry Division supported by an artillery battery to Osan, south of the South Korean capital, Seoul under the overall command of General Douglas MacArthur on June 30, 1950.

The Seattle Mariners journeyed to Los Angeles to take on the Los Angeles Scronks in a three game series.

The Mariners announced a trade completed with Chicago. The Mariners GM, Paul Nesbitt said that the Mariners had parted with shortstop Todd Cruz, center fielder Aaron Rowand, second baseman Billy Graffanino, and minor league pitcher Ross Baumgartner and acquired center fielder Chet Hickman, shortstop Jim Morrison, and infielder Joe Faircloth.

Starting pitchers for the game were Jim Hitchcock for the home team and Norm Talbert for the Mariners.

Talbert, a loser in his first three starts to Detroit, Chicago and New York, has now won two straight to improve his record to 2-3 after a 7.1 inning performance against Los Angeles (8 hits 4 runs 1walk 8 strikeouts).

Stan Perry got the final two outs of the game to earn his fist save since replacing Kevin Polick as the Mariners fireman, or closer.

Polick has given up five runs (4 earned and six hits over his last three outings. Perry did not shine brightly in his debut as the closer.

Left hander Ron Bonner got the first out in the ninth, but put two on, with a walk and a single, bringing Perry into the game.

Perry struck out Mark Adams, then allowed a single to Skippy Cullop to left field fielded quickly by the left fielder Jim Wolfe whose throw to the plate nailed Charlie Banks to end the game on a fine defensive play.

Seattle sent ten batters to the plate and scored six of its' seven runs in the game in the 8th inning. To that point LA starter Jack Barker has carved out a six shutout and led 3-0.

Chet Hickman got the rally started with a one out single up the middle. Jack Barker walked George Bastian putting runners on first and second and bringing his outing to a close.

Jim Hitchcock, his replacement, failed to record an out. Hitchcock faced four batters and all reached base. Jimmy Reese doubled driving in two runs closing the score to 3-2. henry Mathews tied the game 3-3 with a single to left field. Frank Porto reached on an error by 3b Charlie Banks Jim Wolfe singled in Mathews finishing Hitchcock outing.

Jim Gabrielson, the third pitcher of the inning for Los Angeles gave up a single to Jim Martin scoring Porto with a run that was unearned.

Seattle added one more run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Reese on the way to a 7-3 final.

Game two.....

Seattle 7 Los Angeles 4

Anaheim dropped their game 8-5 to Boston. Addison Reed (0-2) left with one out in the third allowing 7 hits and 6 runs in the abbreviated outing.

Dale Fallenstein hit his first of the season for Boston, a two run homer in the 3rd inning and drove in a third run in the fourth with an infield out.

Seattle has now won nine of its last ten and two straight to pull into a tie with Anaheim at the top of the standings.

Seattle took game two 7-4 winning the series and look to sweep in game three.

Mike Schneck, the Los Angeles starting pitcher walked the first batter in the 3rd inning, Jim Wolfe. Catcher Joe Morton's bouncing ball up the middle somehow crept through everyone putting runners on first and second.

Pitcher Jack Parsons did hit bit with a successful bunt that moved both runners up one base. Hughie Parks fly ball scored Wolfe. Chet Hickman drew the Mariners' second walk of the inning putting two on once again and both trotted home on Jimmy Reese's triple to make the score 3-0 Seattle.

One inning later Mark Crowell singled in two runs with a shot over the first base bag making the score 5-0.

Parsons was good for 8.1 innings in which he did not walk a batter and fanned ten. He allowed 4 runs (three earned) on 5 hits.

Lefty Ron Bonner got one out in the ninth and Stan Perry the final two for his second save in the series.
