Milestone watch
February 07, 2017 at 10:11PM View BBCode
Two big ones I have been tracking (former Giants) as Rangers pitchers John Elliott and Tom LaRocca are closing in on some big milestones.
Elliott is 4 wins shy of 300 and 19 K's of 3000, and LaRocca is 2 saves shy of 600 (10th all time). Both could feasibly retire this season so I'm keeping my fingers crossed they get there. Elliott is in 4th place all time with a 2.74 ERA, and 12th with a 1.10 WHIP.
Sam McMahon is at 299 wins, so he will almost certainly get there on the Americans team. He could easily pick up another 12-15 wins next season too. McMahon is 27th all time with a 3.05 ERA and 14th with a 1.11 WHIP
Bob Hoderlein of the Americans is cranking along as previously mentioned...already up to 35th all time with 515 HR, could crack the top 30 this season, and he's only 33!
Frosty Davis of Pittsburgh is 44th all time with 1766 RBI's, and with another good season could get into the 1900 club (only 16 players have done it). He is also at 491 HR.
Vinny Bag O Donuts of Seattle is at 489 HR but I'm not sure he can get to 500 unless he returns next season. He is 39.
Randy Mueller of the Athletics is about to retire and could end up with the 5th best batting average of all time at .323.
Esteban Schoen of the Americans is 10th in batting average and also appears to be close to retiring.
Surprisingly, there are only 2 active pitchers in the top 100 in strikeouts. Steve Blakely at 3146 (64th) and Elliott at 2981 (92nd).
There are also only 2 guys in the top 100 in career steals and they are both retiring. Mike Agganis of Montreal (507 SB - 72nd) and Herman Clarke of Baltimore (505 SB - 76th).
There are somehow 0 active players in the top 100 in career hits, and 1 (Agganis - 82nd) in runs. Only Hoderlein (74th) Hosey (76th) and Schoen (82nd) for RBI's, but Hoderlein will definitely be climbing near the top of that chart someday.
Update
Sam McMahon has reached 300 wins
Tom LaRocca has reached 600 saves
John Elliott is at 299 wins (and has only given up 5 ER in 5 September starts)
And Boston has caught up to Texas with a huge late season winning streak. This is going down to the wire

Awesome work!! Love reading these! That's insane to have possibly 2 300 win pitchers in the same year let alone an Era! I'm just curious how far Hoderlein can go up the HR latter and possible have a new.king just a few seasons since Bishop retired.

As far as the 300 wins in an era i dont think its all that rare. Im sure others could share theirs if they remember but for me specifically i remember my pirates days i had mcdaniel, smith, and baldwin all win 300+ games from the same staff. (I also think mcdaniel remains the only pitcher to throw a perfect game.)

as long as im diving back into history, heres a feat i find fairly amazing. baldwin is the all-time strikeout leader yet only led his league in that category 1 time.

in response to there not being many top 100 entries in career counting #s i offer this. cut it to top 50 and in obp you currently have 9 members, ops 6 members, and ba 9 members. i think bishop may have broke the system for awhile in the former categories but the latter tells of where the strength of players is currently.
