Terrible/Disastorious Phillie Road trip finally ends

Phils 4 LA 3

The floundering Phillies completed a six game road with one win and dropped three back of first place San Francisco. The Phintin's have been killed by extra inning ball games. The have played eleven extra inning games already and they are now 6-5 after losing five straight on the trip and three in extra innings.

Basil (The Mad Russian) Radmanovich started the final game in Los Angeles and went six innings allowed four hits and three runs with eight strikeouts for the Phillies.

Had he not walked three batters in the third inning he may have gone longer. Radmanovich and the plate umpire, Bill Summers, were at odds the entire inning. Summers at one point went to the mound and admonished the Philadelphia because of his body language.

Les Borbon sent a looping liner just fair over third base for a lead-off double. Pitcher Dan Cox tried to bunt Borbon over to third but Radmanovich got off the mound to field it very quickly and threw the runner out at third.

The play really saved the Phillies from a bigger inning for Radmanovich did not get a couple of calls on the first two batters he walked (Kit Chatham and Mike Hershey) and was obviously out of sync walking the third straight hitter (first time in his career)to force home a run (Cox).

A chat with catcher Jack Ellam seemed to calm the Mad Russsian down some.

The infield corners came in.

Chuck Kozar went down swinging but a soft liner hit by Shortstop Jack Greene fell in safely for a two run single and a 3-2 Los Angeles lead.

Both pitchers, Radmanovich and Cox steadied themselves, and did not allow any more scoring until then the seventh inning.

In that seventh inning Mike Little doubled to left field with one out in the inning.

Los Angeles made a pitching change bringing in right hander Larry Dean.

The Phils sent Larry Johnson up to hit for catcher Jack Ellam (possibly because he was tossed by Summers as the bottom of the sixth ended.) Johnson lined out to shortstop Jack Greene. Brownie Astroth pinch hit for Radmanovich (maybe thrown out, maybe taken out) and lined a run scoring single to left field.

Dean struck out slumping Lonesome George Koegel (.204) to end the inning.

Thirty seven year old right hander Bryan Bergman made his major league debut and pitched two scoreless inning recording two strikeouts. Beckman picked up the win and is 1-0.

Ed Workman, who had a run scoring single in the first inning led off the top of the ninth that was followed by Hal Vickers single that put runners on first and third.

Mark Little hit into a 5-4-3 double play that Workman scored what turned out to be the winning run on.

Ray Trekell, thought to be by many to be a fairly nice guy, came in to pitch the ninth inning. He gave Bill Summers a friendly wave as he came calming striding in and it did not please any of the men in blue.

But nothing ever really effect the men in blue...Trekell who had ten walks in thirty two innings suddenly walked two with one out (Willie Dalton batting .083 and no walks previously and catcher George Stromme (batting .204 another fearsome slugger ohhhh).

Might have been a disaster had not Les Borbon not hit a bullet right at Shortstop Eric Haslin who started a 6-4-3 double play.

The plate umpire was still a little miffed when a reporter asked him about the rifts with the Phillie pitchers and catcher Jack Ellam. He in no uncertain terms said, ''Talk to me about most anything....unentellible mumbling.....You can call me a mother.....couldn't quite get that last part....Don't ever mention that 'Radmon' a whatever, that last p...k that came in Threekiller and Ellam... whoever...he is..they are all three the lowest forms of living matter ever...in baseball or the back streets of everywhere...!!!"

So it'll be nice to play a home game.....
