In battle for first Boston takes game one

The big series in the American League got underway at Yankee Stadium in New York. Meanwhile scores from around the league saw third place Seattle downed seventh place Kansas City 7-3.

Oakland rebounded from a series loss to Boston to throttle the slumbering Detroit Jalopies 11-3

it was Detroit's fourth consecutive loss and during the streak Detroit has been outscored 26-12.

Minnesota overcame Chicago behind Charlie Cruz (1-0). Cruz, acquired from Boston for right hander Bob Klink, made his first stat of the season after seventeen relief appearances for the Beaneaters went 7.1 innings allowing eight hits and just two runs.

Minnesota picked up a badly needed victory after going 2-8 in their last ten games.

In New York the starting pitchers were Tom Bluege for Boston and Johny Kardow for New York.

The New York Bad Apples (nee Yankees) took a2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning scoring after center fielder Frankie Goosen misplayed a fly ball off the bat of Bob Doran extended the inning for Roy Meier to hit a two run homerun off Bluege, his 6th, the 5th allowed by Bluege this season.

Boston took the lead in the 3rd inning by scoring three runs off Kardow.

Catcher Jim Jacome singled and stole his 14th base of the season. Bluege struck out attempting to bunt. Shortstop Tony Richardson's single to left field drove in Jacome.

Frank Goosen atoned for his error with a RBI triple scoring Richardson to tie the game 2-2.Art Bradley's ground out to second scored Goosen to put Boston ahead 3-2.

New York seized the lead back in the bottom of the 6th inning on a two-run home run by Chick Rivera off Bluege.

Doran and Jim Davis followed with singles putting runners on first and third with one out. A sacrifice fly by Meier put New York back in front 5-4 and signaled the end for Bluege.

Ron Wiggons got the final out o that frame striking out New York catcher Curt Reitz.

Lou Schmidt took over for New York as the game became a battle of the bullpens. Schmidt lasted only two-thirds of an inning giving up two runs on two hits/

Doug Rigney's solo homerun off Schmidt (his 3rd) tied the game 5-5 with no outs.

Tony Richardson hit his first of the year with two outs in the inning off Schmidt giving Boston a 6-5 lead.

Bob Klink, a new addition to the bullpen pitched an uneventful 7th.

Boston tacked on run number 7 in the top of the eighth off left hander Gary Walters.

Craig Reed gave up a run on three hits in the 8th.

New York was still in need of a run to tie in the bottom of the 9th. Bobby Schmidt held on for his fourth save off the season to put Boston one up in the series and down by a single game now...
