Saturday august 12, 1950.

On this date in history Frenchmen Louis Pasteur and Claude Bernard completed the first pasteurization test.

On August 12, 1950 the Atomic Energy Commission issued the first book on safety in the event of a nuclear war, entitled "The Effects of Atomic Weapons.''

Editor Joseph O. Hershfielder wrote in the introduction that ''Just as our ancestors learned to face the perils of cholera and small box epidemics, so must modern man learn to live with man-made danger of atomic attack.''

In baseball news the first place Colorado Mockingbirds pummeled second place Los Angeles 10-5 in game one of a three game series ibn Los Angeles between the top two NL squads.

Blessed with 10 runs of support on 16 hits, right hander Paul Golden (3-1) threw a complete game allowed twelve hits and five runs disappointing the sell out crowd at Dockers Stadium.

The Birds scored three times in the top of the first off Los Angeles starting pitcher Mike Woodard (LP 2-3).

The rampant running game of Colorado played a part in the three run inning. Colorado has five of the top six base stealers in the league at this time; Barraza; 14, Walt Johnson 9, Hughes 8, and Smalley 7 are the top five and Bob Lynn ranks sixth.

Lead-off batter Tom Smalley lined a single to right field to get things started.. Woodard preoccupied himself with holding Smalley on first base and he walked Barraza. One out later Willie Hughes singled in the first run (Smalley). Lynn's sharply hit grounder to shortstop got run number two in an d Harold Parent singled in Hughes with the third run.

Seven batters came up, there were three hits, three runs and there was one man left on base. 3-0 Colorado.

An error in the second by Emil Borgious led to a fourth run and Hughes tripled and scored on a Bobby Lynn singled. Colorado put the game out of reach in the 5th when they added four more runs.

Hughes singled to left field stole second base and scored on a double by Lynn.

Lou Williams took over for Woodard and was immediately roughed up. Shortstop Walt Johnson walked and catcher Joe Fiene hit a three run homerun (2nd) to pave the way for a 10-5 win for Colorado.
