Colorado 4 Houston 2

Chuck Crisp hit a solo homerun off Colorado starting pitcher Paul Golden in the first inning for ac short lived 1-0 Houston lead that quickly evaporated when Colorado erupted for four runs in their half of the inning.

Colorado second baseman Bobby Lynn, having a tough year so far with the batting average (.232), singled to right field with one out. Willie Hughes lines a single past third baseman sending Mike Lynn around to third base.

Hughes stole second putting runners on second and third with no one out. Walt Johnson singled with one out off Harry Sullivan driving in Lynn. Tom Smalley, the next batter, homered, his 6th to put Colorado up 4-1.

The only other scoring in the game came in the seventh inning when Ike Bankhead hit his 7th homer.

Golden went eight innings allowed five hits and two earned runs struck out seven and walked two to go 7-1 for the season.

Lance Holbert saved his 15th game with a scoreless ninth inning and his second of this series. Holbert leads the AL in saves.

Colorado 3 Montreal 2 (Game two of two)

Game one was rained out on Friday, September 1st, and played as part of a Saturday twi-night double header.

Bob Newkirk started for the home team and immediately gave up a run in the first inning on two hits.

Mike Gilham grounded a single between third baseman Harold Parent. Ray Willis reached on a fielder's choice forcing Gilham at second. Dell Dixon doubled to left field scoring Willis.

1-0 Houston.

Colorado threatened in their half of the first inning. Tony Shwinieke singled and tried to score on a double by Harold Parent but was thrown out on a close play at the plate by right fielder Ike Bankhead.

Colorado kept the pressure on in the second inning scoring a run to tie the game 1-1.

Walt Johnson singled on a ground ball into center field. Bob Lynn lined a single to right field sending Johnson racing to third base. Al Ward's bouncer to first advanced Lynn to second and
Larry Gardner singled to right field driving in Johnson to tie the game after two innings.

Shwinieke hit his 4th homerun with two out off Nellie Burrell.

Parent singled to left field. Johnson doubled to left center field driving in Parent for a 3-1 Colorado lead.

Houston scored a single run in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 3-2.

Nino Walkup doubled with no one out and Ike Bankhead singled him in but that was all Houston could muster off Newkirk (WP 8-1 8 IP 5Hits 2 runs, both earned and Lance Holbert claimed his 15th save, the most in the American League.

Final in game one 3-2 Colorado. Colorado sweeps the double header and will go for a series sweep in game three.

Around the league;

Second place Pittsburgh stayed four games behind Colorado with a 5-4 victory over Brooklyn.

Jim Eckhardt quietly becoming one of the league's top aces went six innings on a day he was under the weather with a cold allowing 8 hits four runs (all earned) three walks four strike outs.

Bill Foster took over for the final three innings holding Brooklyn hitless striking out five earning his second save of the season.

Mike Lyons worked eight scoreless innings allowed five hits walked two and struck out six. Hal Houser pitched the ninth.
