Right hander Mike Lyons also gave up four hits and one earned run over eight innings but he also allowed two unearned runs in the two scoring innings for Colorado.
In the fifth inning Tom Smalley liner to right field skipped past right fielder Dave Vaughn and rolled past him to the warning track putting Smalley on second with a double. Bob Lynn's ground out to second advanced Smalley to third with two outs and Walt Johnson's single put Colorado ahead 1-0.
One inning later, a two-out throwing error by third baseman Mike Giles allowed Jimmy Stahl to reach second base. Tony Shwinieke drilled a two run home run, his 6th, to put Colorado up 3-0 which was enough to absorb a solo shot by Rusty Bilbrey in the 8th.
Final 3-1 Colorado.

Los Angeles held onto second place with its 40th win of the season but St Louis with 39 wins has won two straight and is just one game behind Los Angeles in strong contention for the wild card at least.
