National League Pennant race is down to the basics

May 04, 2017 at 01:13AM View BBCode

It was a day in September that like all Septembers saw it's baseball campaign beginning to wind down and unlike all Septembers something happened that made many people say hmmmm.

This day Sunday, September 24th, 1950, was a day when much of the skies over the mid-western United States and Ontario, Canada, suddenly darkened in the afternoon prompting the day to be dubbed ''Black Sunday.'' From noon until about three o'clock it was pitch black.

The cause was smoke from forest fires in northwestern Canada. But because The Mockingbirds were playing in Texas they were not effected.

The Colorado Mockingbirds find themselves perched on the cusp of clinching the National League pennant. The dropped game one 7-6 in ten innings.

In game two the Birds fifth starter Horacio Escobar made his fourth start since being added to the starting rotation late in the season.

In Escobar's four starts he has been consistent allowing fourteen earned runs on twenty five hits over 25.1 innings with twenty-eight punch outs, more than a strikeout per inning.

Escobar has also nineteen and like all his other appearances he has had serious control problems.

In this game he walked six. Five came in Houston's four run second inning and all but one of the walks scored in the inning. Escobar walked the first four batters of the inning; Cecil Bryant, Earl Bloomfield, Nino Walkup and Ike Bankhead. The walk to Bankhead forced in the first run (Bryant).

Mike Gilham singled to right field driving in Bloomfield. Walkup was forced out at home on a comebacker to the mound by Mike Krenchicki.

Escobar fell behind Ray Willis and walked him (5th walk in the inning) forcing in another run (Bankhead).

Dell Dixon singled in the final run of the inning. 4-0 Houston.

Escobar left with one out in the 5th inning and the four pitchers out of the Colorado bullpen. Bill Campbell got the final two outs of the sixth inning striking out one of two batters he faced.

Ed Conway, a thirty nine year old right hander made his major league debut after spending 12 years in the minor leagues. Conway went two innings allowed two innings struck out two and picked up the win, 1-0.

Colorado scored a run in the 4th inning cutting the lead to 4-1.

Avery Granlich doubled to right and scored on Tony Shwinieke's single.

Houston added on a run in the bottom of the 6th making the score 5-1.

Colorado tied the score 5-5 in the 7th inning.

Larry Garrett and Tom Smalley hit solo homeruns and Walt Johnson added a two run blast as the Birds unleased a power barrage to get back into the game.

Danny Mueller, a seldom used sub, homered in the 9th inning putting Colorado ahead 6-5.

Jacinto Barraza and pinch hitter Al Ward both Harold Parent tripled in two runs.

The Birds held on for a 9-5 win reducing their magic number to two.

In the rubber game of the series Colorado started Harry Cheney and the thirty-seven year old right hander reversed a recent trend with eight solid innings; two runs on five hits walk two struck out five to move to 7-5 this season.

Tony Shwinieke's solo homerun in the fourth inning put Colorado ahead 2-1, then added a run in the 5th inning when Jacinto Barraza hit his seventh triple and scored on a single by Tom Smalley.

Mike Krenchicki homered for Houston in the 6th.

Colorado's win reduced their magic number to one and they can clinch with one win against Los Angeles in Los Angeles or back at home against the Braves to finish out the season.

A loss by los Angeles also clinched it for Colorado who would like to rest their regulars prior to the playoffs.
