The World Series luster has completely worn off the Colorado Mockingbirds by now and any lingering hangover has been shaken out of the players. As of right now two key components of that team, first baseman Jacinto Barraza and Willie Hughes a catalyst in left field are on the disabled list.

The biggest surprise in the league, Brooklyn holds down the top spot with a 27-12 record three gamers better than Colorado. Brooklyn finished fifth last season ten games behind Colorado with a 39-42 record (.481%).

Both starting pitchers pitched into the eighth inning, Harry Cheney went 7.1 innings allowed six hits one run walked one struck out two to get the win (3-3)and Mark Harris also left with one out in the eighth having allowed four earned runs three walks six strikeouts.

Colorado's first score came in the 5th inning on shortstop Walt Johnson's fourth homeruns this season. Johnson, hitting .220, had nine runs batted in now, also got off to a similar start last season and was hot down the stretch.

Atlanta tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the 4th. Jim Lee hit a solo homerun off Cheney with one out in the inning.

Colorado scored a big run had a big inning in the seventh inning getting to Harris for a couple of runs. Bob Lynn had a lead off single. Harold Parent and Tony Caudill both walked to load the bases.

Pinch hitter Tony Shwieneike, batting for the shortstop Walt Johnson, hit into fielders choice ; pitcher to catcher for out one....Tom Smalley lined out hard to third base man Greg Smith for the second out, but catcher Larry Garrett's soft single to center drove in Parent and Caudill for a 3-1 lead.

Atlanta went down in order in the bottom of the bottom of the seventh. Cheney got three ground ball outs although the first one was not routine. Harold Parent speared a shot off the bat of Fred McKay and threw him out.

In the eighth inning. Rookie Julio Bolton struck out leading off. All around handy man Jim Stahl walked a stole second.

That was the end for Harris...

Atlanta brought on veteran lefthander Joe Sanders. Stahl stole third base of him...Sanders walked Mike Lynn putting runners on first and third. Stahl scored the final run on a sacrifice fly by Parent.

4-1 Colorado.

Cheney ran into trouble as well in the eight inning...The lead off batter, pinch hitter Mark Adams, singled...Jim Lee singled with one out...Dave Edmonds came on in a pitching change and got two big outs; Greg Smith on a comebacker and Hank Spencer on a grounder to third baseman Parent.

After that Lance Holbert finished off Atlanta for his 17th save.
