Joe McIntosh's eighth homerun, with one on, and the first of two round trippers by Joe Collins, this one his seventh for the season of Tiger starting pitcher Ed Abernathy staked the Yankees to a 3-0 first inning lead.
The Bombers continued the homerun onslaught with two solo drives in the second the first of the season for both Jerry Davanon and Gilberto Hoy to increase the lead to 5-0.
Billy Gardner hitting .333, and finding some playing time at third base and in the outfield, doubled driving in Joe Collins who singled.
Detroit countered with single runs in the 3rd and 4th inning. The third inning run came thanks to an error by Yankee starting pitcher Jay Groom and the second on Aurelio Morton's first of two homers for Detroit in the fourth inning.
Collins, who had a banner day (3 hits 3 runs 3 RBI on two homeruns), hit his second home run (his 8th) in the 5th inning, to build the Yankee lead to 8-2.
Morton's hit his second homerun in the 6th inning off Groom with a runner board to cut the lead to 8-4.
Joe McIntosh singled in one more run for the Yankees in the 8th inning to make the final score 9-4 New York.
Jay Groom went nine innings for his third straight win. Groom gave up just three hits and four runs (three earned) walked four and recorded two strikeouts.
