Colorado 4 Brooklyn 0
Ken Hoffman has gone from baseball's scrap heap to the pent house in less than a month. On August 17th he was put on waivers by the Los Angeles Traffic. On August 21st his contract was purchased by the Colorado Mockingbirds off the waiver wire. Hoffman was pleasantly surprised when told he would be added to the Colorado starting rotation. He made his first start on August 25th going 7.1 innings to defeat Montreal 2-1 at home.
Hoffman is 2-0 after two starts with a 0.55 ERA and fourteen strikeouts in 16.1 innings.
The second start had a little more luster to it. It was the second game of a series with first place Brooklyn. Hoffman began the game by retiring the first fifteen batters before walking Ed Cullop to start the sixth inning. that walk spoiled the perfect game.
The 6'2'' right hander threw 107 pitches, 79 strikes 28 balls and managed to keep the Brooklyn hitters off balance the whole game with a good fastball, a sharp breaking curveball, and he had complete control of his change up which produced five of his eight strikeouts.
Catcher Larry Garrett caught the first seven innings of the game but was pinch hit for in the seventh inning and Joe Fiene took over for the final six outs.
''Both of them a good at calling a game,'' said Hoffman, ''but both have completely different styles, and I believe that in itself helped me over the final innings of this game.''
Both catchers were giddy with joy at catching a no-hitter. Garrett indicated that this was the first no-hitter he had been a part of, other than two on the losing side when in the minor leagues. ''One of these things just spring on you .. you never know when one will occur and its awesome to be part of one'' he said.
Losing pitcher Bill Dorgan (3-4) like many ''other pitchers'' involved in a no-hit game pitch extremely well in a losing cause. Dorgan went eight inning allowed four runs on six hits over eight innings with two walks and a season high ten strikeouts.
Colorado had four runs on seven hits off Dorgan and reliever Chick Myers.
Harold Parent and Bob Lynn combined for four hits scored all four runs drove in three of the four runs. First baseman Johnny Gonzalez singled in the other run.
Parent singled in the second inning and Lynn launched his seventh homerun of the season. Later the two combined again in the eighth inning to double the lead. Parent singled and scored on Lynn's ninth double of the season. Lynn scored on a single by Johnny Gonzalez.
The win moved Colorado to within one of the national league lead and was their eighth straight win.
Colorado will go for the sweep with Harry Cheney (4-4 3.40 ERA) will be opposed by Chick Marberry (4-1 3.26 ERA).
