Colorado 3 Houston 1

Colorado right hander Ken Hoffman continues to be the September pitching phenom for Colorado. Making only his fourth career start since joining the team in August, Hoffman came oh so close to pitching his second no-hitter of the season allowing just one run on a seventh inning single by Ed Sullivan that broke up the no-hitter and drove in Frank Jestadt from second.

Jestadt reached on a two base throwing error by second baseman Bob Lynn. The run tied the game 1-1.

Hoffman, despite the two errors by Lynn got good defensive support during his eight innings. Lynn had ten total chances and was part of two double plays.

Colorado had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Harold Parent's 9th homer of the season. Jimmy Grigsby (7th off Grigsby this season) battled Hoffman on even terms until he walked his only two batters of the game; Smalley and Johnson to start the ninth inning.

That brought Bob Millar into the game.

Millar got pinch hitter Al Ward to bounce out softly to third base, a play that allowed both runners to advance. Houston walked Joe Fiene to fill the bases and Hoffman, batting for himself, forced Smalley at the plate; pitcher to catcher, for the second out. Jacinto Barraza drove in two big runs then with a single giving Colorado a 3-1 lead.

The two runs became very important when Lance Holbert had trouble getting Houston out in the bottom of the ninth.

Colonel McIntyre doubled to start the inning. Arnold Warner's ground ball to second moved McIntyre to third. Holbert walked Frank Jestadt. Ed Sullivan drove in his second run of the game with his second hit, a single to centerfield. Center fielder Tom Smalley made a good throw to third to get Jestadt trying to advance on the play.

Holbert retired Sam Page on a grounder to Barraza to end the game and secure his 29th save of the season.

The win evened the series one game each and Houston will pitch right hander Harry Sullivan, 5-7 4.22 against lefthander Bob Newkirk 7-3 3.49.

Around the rest of the league Los Angeles nipped Atlanta 7-6. Windy Brown the winning pitcher, 2-3. Pittsburgh and St Louis both won; Pittsburgh edged Montreal in a tight one 2-1 and the Perfectos took care of Brooklyn 3-1.
