Mocks Complete Sweep of Perfectos

June 27, 2017 at 03:31AM View BBCode

Colorado 5 St. louis 4 (12 innings)

The Colorado mockingbirds completed a three game sweep of the first place St Louis Perfectos by winning a second straight extra inning game by a 5-4 score. The second game went ten innings, the finale took twelve to complete in this hard fought series. Colorado's Lance Holbert got the wins in the games one and two and St Louis veteran relief pitcher Harry Grieve got tagged for both losses in game two and three.

Colorado's bullpen gets much credit for its contributions in the clubs current five game winning streak contributing 24.1 innings allowing just 11 hits and three earned runs for a 1.12 ERA.

This game followed the back and forth pattern that the first two games of the series exhibited. Robert Girardi got St Louis off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning by hitting a lead off homerun off Colorado ace Arthur Fox.

It was Girardi's fourth homerun this season and the fourth given up by Fox this season.

Frank Jestadt's second of the season tied the game 1-1 he 3rd inning off Bill August.

Julio Bolton, just recalled from AAA, hit a two run homerun in the 6th inning following a Danny Mueller single to put Colorado ad 3-1.

August ran into more trouble in the 7th after he walked Jacinto Barraza. Barraza stole second base (steal #22 -- first in the league *Barraza led the league in stolen bases in 1950). Clutch hitting Tony Shwinieke singled him in to make it 4-1.

But that would not be enough against the determined and desperate Perfectos!

Gen Landreth launched his 3rd of the season and the fifth homerun off Fox in the 8th inning to cut that lead to 4-2.

In the eight Jesus Wagner blew his first save opportunity this season allowing two hits and two runs in the ninth inning to tie the game 4-4.

Wagner also had some control issues in the inning. After allowing a lead off single he hit Kip Terwilliger and walked Ron Drews to load the bases with no one out.

Wagner did a good job of minimizing the damage by getting pinch hitter Jose Serum to hit into a 4-6-3 double play on which Salverson scored.

Robert Girardi's two out single scored Terwilliger with the tying run. (4-4)

Lance holbert got the final out and pitched a scoreless 10th inning giving way to rookie Bob Yoter making his major league debut.

Yoter went two scoreless inning picking up his first career win in the bottom of the 12th when Barraza and Johnson singled putting runners on first and third. Johnson was caught stealing and Grieve struck out Willie Hughes before Harold Parent came through with the game winning single.

AROUND THE LEAGUE.....

Pittsburgh outscored second place Los Angeles 10-8.

Pittsburgh rang up sixteen hits in the game to score ten times. Jake Lade led the way with four hits and two runs scored.

Kevin Friend hit his 3rd homerun for Pittsburgh, Ed Brady (2) and Kent Tate (6) both homered for Los Angeles.
