Bob Lynn's revenge

June 27, 2017 at 08:27AM View BBCode

Second baseman Bob Lynn was traded by the Colorado Mockingbird to the Houston Gunslingers on July 3, 1952 along with infielder Johnny Gonzalez and pitcher Bob Newkirk for Cy Young Award winner Arthur Fox and shortstop Frank Jestadt.

Lynn won a world series while with the Mockingbirds, was a National League All Star and won the Gold Glove at second base for his fielding. He batted .322 with nine homeruns and twenty five runs batted in in 1951.

Yet when he was traded the reason he was told was primarily because the organization did not believe he could reproduce the numbers he had put up the prior season.

The lack of respect and lack of confidence was disheartening and I have not forgotten it.'' said Lynn in an interview with 'The Sporting Life.''

It also has been a hard transformation for Lynn to adjust to playing for a last place club after enjoying the fruits of two winning seasons with Colorado.

''I play to win..every game, I play to win and losing hurts....hurts a lot.''

The Gunslingers are 21-36 in eighth place this season fourteen games behind first place St. Louis. Lynn added, ''I relish the fact that they aren't in first, or second place, this season and we have one more series to help insure that that does not take place.''

In nine games against his former club the Gunslingers are 4-5, the second best mark Houston has put up against all teams in the NL Lynn has done his part.

In those nine games he has sixteen hits in thirty eight at bats, a .421 batting average and he has scored seven runs has one double, one homerun four stolen bases one hit by pitches and driven in ten runs.

Against the other seven teams Lynn has batted .219 (35 for 160).

So there beats a very resentful heart in Houston for the Mockingbirds to contend with.
