Rookie callups helping Colorado

June 29, 2017 at 10:39PM View BBCode

Colorado has picked up eight players from their minor leagues or off the waiver wire to lend a hand down the stretch in September.

Many teams used the relaxed roster limits differently in September by Colorado has historically been a team that uses several call up to maximum effect and has had good success doing so.

The 1951 Rookie of the Year Ken Hoffman was called up shortly before September last season on August 25 went 6-0 the rest off the season including a one hitter in his major league debut and a no hitter in his second start against Brooklyn.

This season infielder Darren Ratliff has better .312 with three runs batted in in 19 games since he was recalled on July 26 1952.

Pitcher Bob Yoter has appeared in one game gone 1-0 pitching two innings giving up just one hit.

Catcher Buddy Ausenio fell out of favor in Atlanta after batting .290 with 3 homeruns and 27 runs batted in in 60 games during the 1950 season. He has batted .286 with three runs batted in for Colorado.

Twenty four year old outfielder Roy Trouppe made his major league debut in the game going 0-1 and starting pitcher Ken Lamar from Prime Rib, Texas started the game and went eight innings for the win allowing eleven hits and five runs, gave up one walk and fanned four.

Last place Houston is now 24-41, fifteen games out, and struggling mightily losing three straight.

Former Colorado pitching stalwart Bob Newkirk started for Houston.

Mike Krischnick hit a solo homerun off the rookie Gil Lamar in the first inning. 1-0 Houston

Colorado replied with some offense in the top of the fourth scoring two runs off Newkirk to take a 2-1 lead.

Walt Johnson and Frank Jestadt singled. Newkirk walked catcher Buddy Ausanio to load the bases, but Lamar bounced into a 4-6-3 double play to foil things. Johnson scored on the double play and Ausanio scored on a Willie Hughes two out single to make it just a two run inning.

Jestadt (four hits in the game) singled and Ausanio (one hit and two walks in the game) walked to start the 5th. Jestadt scored on a ground out by Hughes to make it 3-1 Colorado.

Colorado finally got to Newkirk solidly in the 5th inning when then came up with four runs on four hits to knock Newkirk out of the game and treat his replacement, Orlando Hoover, rudely scalding him for two runs on two hits without him retiring a batter.

Smalley and Parent singled putting runners on first and third and Smalley scored on a ground out by Walt Johnson to finish Newkirk.

Hoover came in and Frank Jestadt doubled, Ausanio and Lamar both walked and Hughes doubled in two runs to make the score 7-1 Colorado.

The rout was on from that point. Parent hit his 14th in the 6th and Sam Page hit his sixth for Houston in the 7th.

Houston got to the rookie for a couple of runs late and then reliever Kettle Berra did not retire a batter allowing a hit and a walk as Houston turned a 9-2 deficit into a save situation for Lance Holbert who picked up his 20th save of the season marking the third straight season Holbert, a two time Fireman of the Year reliever has recorded 20 or more saves.
