Toronto 7 New York 5
The second game of the ALCS was also played in Toronto before a capacity crowd of excited baseball fans oblivious of the fact their hometown heroes were trailing in the series 1-0 and had lost four straight playoff games to the confident New York squad.
Joe Stephenson,10-5 with a 2.95 regular season record made his third start against Toronto posted an 0-2 record with a 4.85 ERA during the season.
The Toronto starter, Vern Taylor (9-4 3.00 ERA) pitched only once against New York and went seven and a third innings for a win. (2 runs on 7 hits a 2.54 ERA)
New York, brimming with confidence, after their game one win fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
Joe Stephenson had some problems with Toronto late in the season and he gave up a run on two hits to start this one. Patrick Pemberton, starting in center field, doubled to right field off the top of the walk with one out. Clutch is the word for Harry Bradley who singled on a line to right to put Toronto in front 1-0.
Scoring the first run seemed to relax the Blue Jays for an inning but they let New York tie it 1-1 in the second.
Taylor gave up consecutive singles to Sheridan and Steels to put runners on first and third with no one out.
Taylor struck out Lefty Hines for a big out number one. Ron Ellis, who homered in game one doubled past right fielder Richie Erickson, an infielder by trade converted to the outfield for his bat, scoring Sheridan.
Erickson recovered the ball and his throw to third was strong and true nipping Steels sliding in. A pivotal play in this game as Lee flied out and New York only scored one to tie the game 1-1.
Stephenson had a strong second inning striking out Spencer and Nicholson and Mangus gunned down Erickson (single) stealing.
They rode their momentum into their at bat to took a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning.
Jack Collins grounded a single up the middle with one out. Mangus, after striking out in his first at bat lined a soft single to center that sent Sheridan around to third base with one out.
Elmer Stuart got him in with another hard shot fielded by Cratcher at third base.
2-1 New York and bedlam and joy in their dugout!
Harry Bradley had four triples in the regular season and he hit his fifth leading off to give Jim Hague, possessor of five sacrifice flies during the regular year a chance to score him with another.
Score tied 2-2 after four innings.
Lefty Hines spent some time in the minors this season for not hitting had a big game two. Hines homered after Steels singled to give New York a 4-2 lead.
Stephenson gave the lead away in the bottom of the seventh. Erickson singled to right field with two outs and catcher Tony Nicholson drove one over four hundred feet off Stephenson to dead center field to tie the game 4-4.
Mack Minshall got the final out of the seventh, striking out Oro, and pitched the eight as well, striking out Cratcher and getting two routine ground outs.
Pete Tarver walked Hines with one out in the 8th and gave up a single to hot hitting Ron Ellis putting runners on first and third with one out.
Ross Doerr hit into a double play to keep a run from scoring.
Tarver gave up a run in the top of the 9th to put New York on top 5-4.
Pinch hitter Marius Wade and Jack Collins both singled. The speedy Wade went to third base and scored on a ground out by Elmer Stuart.
Raul Veres on to close for New York.
Hague singled leading off. Swindell struck out swinging. Pinch hitter extraordinaire Willie Hunter singled to left field sending Hague to third.
Erickson scored them both with a game winning walk-off homerun.
The series is tied now and moving to New York but the swaggering confidence of the New York team might just have taken a hit with the results of game two...
