Toronto's four straight wins can be directly attributed to a tenacious pitching staff. Toronto's starting pitchers have already logged 34.2 innings with two complete games. Over that span the starting pitchers have yielded on four earned runs total for a 1.05 ERA.

That has left only i.2 innings for a talented bullpen to cover perfectly giving the staff an early sensational 1.00 ERA.

That however ranks second to Pittsburgh of the national League's 0.75 staff ERA. The two complete games also trails Pittsburgh's total of three.

The Blue Jays remained unbeaten (4-0) with a workmanlike 5-1 triumph over Tampa Bay. Tampa dropped to 2-2 with the loss.

Toronto starter Adrian Pruitt had some control issues in the early going. Pruitt walked two in the first inning but escaped without allowing a run by getting a key strikeout of Dick Wingard, Lew Murphy on a routine fly to right fielder George White and a force out on a grounder to new shortastop Marty Slagle.

In the home half Pat Pemberton hit a solo homerun off Tampa starter Moe Cash with Steve Cratcher (walk) aboard for a 2-0 lead.

Walks again plagued Pruitt in the second when he walked Jon Cady and Lee Brand with one out. After an animated counsel with catcher Tony Nicholson and hard featured brusque pitching coach Snake-bite Pyson. Pruitt seemingly smiled sheepishly and went back to work.

Pruitt made some effectual pitches to Moe Cash who was trying to bunt and after two failures Cash flied out to center fielder Pat Pemberton with no advance by the runners and Herb Neiger struck out.

Pruitt issued his fifth and final walk in the top of the fourth inning to Si Snyder who was thrown out attempting to steal second by Nicholson.

The played save a run for Toronto or as Tampa would see it cost them a run when Cady homered.

the homerun was the first hit for the Twisters.

2-1 Toronto.

Toronto added a run in the 5th inning.

Johnny Swindell reached on a single and pilfered second base. Steve Cratcher's single to left got him in to score. 3-1 Toronto.

Tampa mounted another scoring chance in the top of the eighth, a pivotal inning in this game.

Murphy singled with two outs. Snyder bunted for a hit. Pruitt once again came up with a timely strikeout getting pinch hitter Harry Willis with a blazing fastball to end the threat.

The Blue Jays seized the moment to add onto their lead. In the bottom of the inning Jim Hague got a one-out free pass from Cash. Marty Slagle doubled into the left-center field gap scoring Hague.

Jim Blackaby replaced Cash.

George White solved him on the third pitch he saw ripped a single to center field scoring Slagle.

That made it 5-1 and that was the final score as Pruitt allowed a single to Cady in the 9th but got a nifty double play started by Cratcher and a weak grounder off the bat of pinch hitter Harley Dempsey to Hague at first to end it.

Anaheim 9 New York 2

Anaheim stayed unbeatened as well, ripping into New York for nine runs in a 9-2 blowout.

Johan Ward went the distance for the win (2 runs on four hits).

Alex Guzman, Lance Daily and Larry Newnam led the way offensively.

Guzman singled in the second inning following earlier hits by Daily and Newnam. Daily scored.

The same trio acted up in the 6th inning.

Daily singled, Newnam singled and Guzman again drove in Daily.

A five run 8th inning blew the doors off the game for Anaheim who sent nine batters to the plate had three hits and were given three walks.

Stan Peterson started everything with a solo homerun off new York starter Billy Miller.

Daily followed with his fourth hit of the game, a double that sent Miller to the showers and brought Fred Gooden in to replace him.

Gooden promptly walked Dixie Livingston.

Both runners advanced on a passed ball charge to Mangus. Guzman walked but Ward bunted into a force out of Newnam at third for the first out. (1-5 on the putout).

Rick Burns made the second out -- ground ball fielded by Gooden who went to first after mishandling the ball on the first try...both runners advanced to second and third.

Gooden obviously laboring walked Lemaster to fill the bases again and Dave Nicholson drove in two of them with a single to right field. (Guzman and Ward scored.)

Mack Minshall came in to finish off the marathon inning by getting the hitter who started it all, Peterson to fly out deep to center field.
