August 03, 2017 at 04:35PM View BBCode

There are a couple of key series in process right now as the top four teams are all engaging each other. Tampa is visiting Toronto and Anaheim is away to New York.

New York has cooled off some dropping three straight, two to Kansas City and game one against Anaheim.

Anaheim notched its third straight win to pull even with the Mess one game behind the co-leaders.

Johan Ward (7-3) used an overpowering fast ball to strike out twelve in seven and a third innings which was good enough to compensate for and allowing nine hits four walks and four runs.

Ward bested former Cy young Award winner Craig Escobar (6-4) who left after six innings (eight hits and four runs.

Jerry Steels had three hits and two runs batted in and Rob Maguire pitched the ninth for his 5th save.

Toronto 6 Tampa Bay 2

Vern Taylor avenged an earlier season loss to Tampa with his first complete game of the season. The former All Star is 6-4 this season.

Moe Cash, 4-4, lost for the second time this season to the Jays. Toronto improved to 3-4 against their arch-rivals using speed from the top of the order early and some prodigious power to pull away later.

Steve Cratcher and Adolfo Oro were on base five times in the game (four hits and a walk) and scored three runs.

The two opened fire in the first inning. Cratcher singled to right field. Oro doubled to right. Right fielder Herb Nieger made an outstanding defensive play to threw Cratcher out at the plate (second time this season).

Jim Hague put Toronto ahead 1-0 with a one out single to center field.

The same two stirred things up in the 5th inning. Cratcher tripled and Moe Cash walked Oro after a lengthy at bat (12 pitches).

Oro stole second putting runners on second and third. Hague once again capitalized on a RBI chance knocking in both with a stand-up double into the left center field gap.

3-0 Toronto.

Two 7th inning hit for Tampa, a single by Cady and a run scoring double by Snyder cut the lead to 3-1.

Hague led off the 8th with his third hit of the game but was gunned down attempting to steal second by All Star catcher Cy Snyder. Then Blue Jays put on a power display in the eighth inning. Marty Slagle homered off Cash to chase him for Sam Dauss who gave up two more home runs to Johnny Swindell, and Skeeter Murray, acquired from the Cubs.

That was the first time in two seasons that Toronto had gone back-to-back-to back in a game.

Tim Shannon hit one for Tampa in the 9th to make the final score 6-2
