Moriarty League; Showdown in Toronto

New York sits precariously atop the American league with a 39-23 (.629) record two games in front of on-coming Toronto. Toronto has rebounded from a down turn that saw it drop into fourth place behind Tampa and Texas and just ahead of Anaheim.
The Ameican League has feature those five teams vying for position all season long and Toronto's dominance of New York has been a saving grace for them.
Toronto has been only a surprising 12-15 against the other three contenders.
The first two games of this series has gone to Toronto.
In game one left hander Ramon Duckworth matched up with New York's veteran ace Joe Stephenson. Neither figured in the decision but both pitched effectively.
Duckworth went seven and two-thirds innings allowed eight hits four runs (earned) walked four and had seven strikeouts.
Stephenson went only six and two thirds innings, a early exit by his standards, but he only gave up four runs walked four and struck out five.
Duckworth gave up an infield single to Elmer Stuart but got out of the inning by picking Stuart off.
Toronto got to the New York ace quickly in the first inning. Steve Cratcher singled and stole second. The number two hitter in the lineup, Adolfo Oro singled him in for a early 1-0 advantage.
New York took a 2-1 lead for Stephenson in the fourth inning. The always troublesome Ron Ellis singled with two outs off Duckworth. Bill Rios picked on an off speed pitch that had too much off the strike zone for a two run home run, his first of the season.
2-1 New York.
Toronto's pitchers helped himself with the bat with a one out singe in the 5th inning. Cratcher's slow hopper back to the mound advanced him and he scored on a single by little Adolfo Oro.
New York mounted a threat in the sixth but did not score. Ellis singled with two out, stole ,and was able to go on to third when catcher Larry Seybold's throw went into center field.
Duckworth stiffened and got Rios on a routine fly to left field to end the inning.
Toronto took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning off Stephenson.
Hague walked with no one out and stole his tenth base. Duckworth's failed bunt attempt was caught by the catcher and Cratcher bounced out to first for the second out.Murray and Slagel came through with consecutive two out singles to drive in two runs.
The lead did not last long. New York tied it in the 8ighth inning. Duckworth gave Stuart a lead off pass. Russ Doerr hit into a double play starter on a comebacker to the mound (1-6-3) but the inning was far from over.
Marius Wade singled. Ron Ellis walked with two outs and Rios drove them both in with a double into the left field corner.
Gary Smith relieved Duckworth with the score tied and the lead run on second and kept him there by getting Jerry Steels to ground out to Cratcher at third.
Mack Minshall pitched a strong eighth inning for New York. Bradley flied to left to start it. Pinch hitter George White walked. and stole second (stolen base #13) A passed ball on catcher Harry Mangus moved him to third. Minshall struck out pinch hitter Mike Crim and catcher Mike Richmond grounded to shortstop.
Smith pitched on and recorded two strikeouts in a perfect 9th inning for him and was rewarded with his first win after two straight recent losses when Toronto rallied in the bottom of the ninth.
Gred Gooden walked both rookie pinch hitter Herofume Kobayashi, and the Steve Cratcher, to start the inning. Murray forced Cratcher at second but beat the rap at first avoiding the double play. Kobayashi went to third.
With those two on first and third, Slagle hit a groundball to first and Kobayashi beat the throw home to score the winning run.

Game two....
TORONTO 5 NEW York 4
George Twombley summoned up his usual magic against New York and lasted eight inning giving up just four hits and one run with no walks and eight strikeouts an excellent performance against a quality team in the pennant race.
Twombley had some struggles during the game. He did not have a three up-three down inning until the 5th inning when he had two weak comebacker and a bouncer softly hit to first enroute to retiring the last twelve men he faced in order.
Twombley gave up a two-out single in the first inning to Elmer Stuart in the first but stranded him. Jerry Steel's single and 6th stolen base led to the only run for New York in the second on a Ron Ellis RBI hit.
1-0 New York.
A double play in the third inning erased another hit. Shortstop Marty Slagle robbed Steels of a second straight hit in the fourth..
Mike Simon held Toronto scoreless until the 6th inning. Skeeter Murray singled with one out. Hague struck out. Two out.
Marty Slagle doubled in Murray tying the score 1-1.
Johnny Swindell singled home Slagle stole second but got greedy and was thrown out attempting to steal third to end the inning.
2-1 Toronto.
Toronto put the game on ice in the eighth inning off relievers Fred Gooden and Mack Minshall.
Steve Cratcher pinch hitting for the pitchers, Twombley, drew a lead off walk from Gooden.
Cratcher was on the move stealing second as Oro swung and missed striking out. Gooden issued walk number two to Murray. Hague flied out to center for the second out.. Slagle tripled over the right fielders's head driving in Murray and trotted home on Johnny Swindell's two run homerun off Mack Minshall who took over for Gooden.
Toronto took game one 5-4.
