2020 Draft Breakdown
August 19, 2017 at 11:44AM View BBCode
April of 2016 since I last did one of these, if you want to look that one up. Just to give you something to discuss, I'm going to post what I have finished, but I'm working on it almost daily now so the rest of the analysis will be up sooner rather than later.
+++++
Well, it was a pretty juicy draft, with our analysts projecting almost two full rounds of players who have a chance of red letter development, if given full coaching and full Improvement Chances (ICs) in the majors.
I'm not giving out draft grades this year, just commentary and where I ranked them. All projected values are based on our scouts' experience with red letter growth among prospects. Your mileage may vary.
+++++
If two prospects projected to the same score, I used the following as tiebreakers:

ROUND ONE
Pick #1: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547895]RF Doug Huisman, Kansas City[/url]. Age 17, RHB-The Woodlands HS, Texas.
The second highest projected RF in the draft, but only due to his defense, which projects to a mediocre B Range/C+ Arm; RF is the spot to keep him, possibly 1b. His bat, however, projects to HOF caliber and the highest in this class. Our Rank: #2 overall but an excellent choice for #1, as well.
Pick #2: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547892]SP Pete Mason, Boston[/url]. Age 21, RHP-University of Mississippi.
Our scouts pegged Mason for mid second round but he's the best SP who's closest to major league ready. Our Rank: #23, projects to B/A+ but low in both grades.
Pick #3: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547899]RP Rafael Lewis, New York NL[/url]. Age 17, RHP-Chipley High School, Florida.
Lewis was far and away the best RP in this class. With the Titans bullpen aging out, it was a solid pick but with only 8 Coach Points his development may be affected. Our Rank: #5, projects to A+/B+.
Pick #4: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547937]C Jiggs Judd, Minnesota[/url]. Age 18, RHB-Maranatha High School, California.
Three backstops in this class project to red letters, and that's essentially a bumper crop. Judd, along with Jim Taylor, were the two highest rated and Jiggs has slightly better Health and a better Arm. It was an excellent pick for the Diamondbacks as their current catcher is retiring soon and their backup is bench material. Our Rank: #13 but you can't go wrong picking a good catcher.
Pick #5: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547891]RF Kyle Eyre, Detroit[/url]. Age 20, RHB-NE Texas Community College.
The top-rated RF, Eyre has one of the three best projected bats in the class, though he may struggle in the beginning against RHP. With the Diamonds in rebuild mode, it was a solid choice. Our Rank: #1, based on overall bat+defense.
Pick #6: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547883]3b Kent Breeding, San Diego[/url]. Age 21, RHB-Louisiana State University.
The top rated third baseman and one of the three best bats in this draft. His defense is slightly sub-par and hitting RHP with power will take some time to develop, but a very solid pick. San Diego's return to respectability has been enhanced. Our Rank: #4 overall.
Pick #7: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547882]LF Takayuki Mori, St. Louis[/url]. Age 29, RHB-Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, Japan Pacific League
When you draft a 29-year old player, what you see is what you get with little, if any, further development. That said, Mori has good power and the benefit of going right to the majors without wasting any minor league resources. For the moment, he is the heir apparent in LF for the Hammers when Hipolito John declines or retires. Our Rank: #28, many higher-projected OF but none major league ready.
Pick #8: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547922]LF Steamer Thomas, Milwaukee[/url]. Age 18, RHB-Cook High School, Georgia.
We had Steamer as the #1 LF in this group with a projected prodigious bat but average defense. The Mad Cows have a nice stable of outfielders so a trade may be in Thomas' future, but time will tell. Our Rank: #6, likely a high A- overall with a chance at a full A.
Pick #9: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547929]SP Billy Miller, Philadelphia[/url]. Age 18, RHP-Minooka Community High School, Illinois.
We had Billy Miller pegged as the #1 SP here, with Harry Dickman a very close second, the nod going to Miller due to being a year younger. Seven weeks into the season, Miller was sent packing to the Cyclones in the AL in a trade of young players and prospects. Chicago, with a full boat of red letter rotation already, clearly looking to the future to keep the team's Dynasty running. Our Rank: #11, projected to end up at B+/A+ but low in both grades so a third of a grade off on one is entirely possible.
Pick acquired by KC from Los Angeles NL for veteran catcher Ed Richard, later swapped to Washington.
Pick #10: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547916]2b Bob Davis, Kansas City[/url]. Age 18, SHB-Desert Mountain High School, Arizona.
The Athletics grabbed potentially the #1 hitter in this draft and Davis' projected score was #3 overall by our analysts, so they are having great results this season. His Range may warrant a move to the hot corner but this was a great pick for the tenth slot. Our Rank: #3
Pick #11: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547909]SP Duane Kelly, Chicago AL[/url]. Age 17, RHP-McKinney High School, Texas.
Harry Dickman was still on the board, who projects to one point higher but Kelly being two years younger gives him a chance to surpass our projection, and as we mentioned earlier, the Cyclones already have a loaded rotation in their prime so younger works well for them. Kelly will be a strikeout pitcher only occasional control issues. Our Rank: #16, projects to A+/Low B (B- very likely)
Pick #12: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547964]C Jim Taylor,
Baltimore[/url]. Age 17, SHB-Cowan High School, Indiana.
Taylor and Judd (which sounds like a country duo) were the top two catchers in this class, and he immediately becomes one of the top prospects in the NatBo's system. We had him in the Top 10. Our Rank: #9, with a slightly better Range than Judd
Pick #13: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547896]SP Gil Anson, Pittsburgh[/url]. Age 21, RHP-The Citadel.
Anson, who has already had elbow surgery once from trying to throw the curve too early, is that rare bird: A soft-tossing righty. His fastball is mediocre but he's developed an array of off-speed pitches he can already throw with enough accuracy to pitch in the majors. With Pittsburgh's rotation approaching their declines, it looks like he was selected as a ready replacement in a year or two. Our Rank: #44, projected to C+/A+
Pick acquired from Washington summer of 2019 for All Star RP Uhara Nyoto.
Pick #14: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547931]RP Gene Viola, New York NL[/url]. Age 18, LHP-Yucaipa High School, California.
A flamethrower with Control issues, Viola was nevertheless the next best reliever in this class, though A+/C+ and a high B+ overall grade may be his ceiling. Traded to KC just 10 SimDays ago for veteran 2b Fritz Bradley. Our Rank: #41, only four pitchers in this class projected to hit red
Pick #15: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547925]2b Matt Yastrzemski, Oakland[/url]. Age 18, SHB-Torrance High School, California.
With Bob Davis off the board, Yaz became the best 2b available, though more potent hitters were still out there. He moves to the top of Oakland's prospect list. Our Rank: #17, strong bat with average defense
Pick acquired May of 2019 from Atlanta for All Star CF Gene Brown.
Pick #16: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547973]RF Chuck Santana, Minnesota[/url]. Age 18, RHB-Brooks County High School, Georgia.
OF was the abundant position for red letter players this draft, with RF being the richest. That being said, there were still two higher-projected rightfielders available. Though his Speed+Power package makes him hard to pass up. Our Rank: #37, but A+ in Speed, PvR and PvL
+++++
[color=navy]FIRST PICKS FOR THE REST OF US[/color]
Pick acquired May 2019 from NY NL for veteran catcher Felix White.
Pick #19: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547970]CF Pete Jackson, Los Angeles NL[/url]. Age 17, SHB-North Gwinnett High School, Georgia.
Well, there were still three higher projected centerfielders on the board at this point of the draft, so this is a bit of a head scratcher, but Jackson does project to A- with proper development. Our Rank: #27 older brother Steve already patrolling CF for the Youngstuds.
Pick #46: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547900] 2b Terence Sellers, Washington[/url]. Age 22, RHB-Rice University.
Projected to a low B+, Sellers was a non-starter. He refused his contract to continue his studies in Applied Marketplace Dynamics. Washington let him go, the price of making the playoffs and going all in by dealing your first two picks in this draft. Grade: C+
Pick #48: [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=12547924]CF Jimmie Calmus, Atlanta[/url]. Age 21, LHB-University of Michigan.
Jimmie projects to good Range and some decent power against righties but a less than average B+ overall grade and not worth the Mudhen's development resources. Our Rank: Unranked, but being a lefty in CF it would have been fun to watch him throw.
+++++
Going to do a few more since there are still so many quality players on the board.
