Washington takes over first place!

For the first time in a long while the Washington Senators have escaped their legendary moniker of being ''first in war ... first in peace ... a last in the American League. On this date, September 4, 1951, the Senators won their fourth straight game to take a one game lead over Anaheim who lost to Boston 3-1.

Washington changed that score in the fourth inning. Tom Ragland singled with two out. Bobby Alvarez walked both Ron Shaw and Larry Bilardi with two outs to load the bases then issued his third straight walk to Larry Fear to force home a run (Shaw).

2-1 New York.

Mert Copeland singled with one out in the 5th inning to start a key rally for Washington. Copeland stole second base (16th of the season). Alvarez, distracted by the base runner, walked Larry Maxcy and Ragland singled in Copeland tying the game 2-2.

The game remained tied until the 8th inning. The inning started with second baseman Dick Porter making an outstanding defensive play to rob Gene Hutton of a hit.

Ron Shaw singled to left field. Pinch hitter Walt Lidle doubled into the left field corner scoring Ron Shaw.

Bumbry completed the game for the win for Washington.

Bumbry now has appeared in 18 games, has a 3-1 record with a 2.91 ERA over 21.2 innings pitched allowing 15 hits 8 runs/7 earned, one hit batter, 14 walks and 20 strikeouts.

Having played ten extra inning games and played in several close one run games the Senators went into the finale hoping for a stellar outing from starter Kirk Clark to get the sweep and their fourth straight win.

Gene Hutton, robbed of a big hit late in game two, hit a solo homerun in the second inning of game three to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Hutton was the culprit again in the 6th when he came through with a RBI single to drive in Washington's second run. 2-0 Washington.

New York put its only run on the scoreboard in their 7th inning on a solo homerun by Gene Fidrych which cut the lead to 2-1.
