The Hawks have managed to secure a split of the first two games in a three game series with Washington. The Senators have been playing very well this month and are currently one game in front of Anaheim in the American league, two in front of Boston and four in front of the Yankees who have lost five straight games.

The Hawks scored all nine of their runs over the 6th, 7th and 8th innings off starting pitcher Stubby Clements (5 innings 7 hits 5 runs), Joshia White did not retire a batter giving up 1 hit 3 runs on 2 walks and Otis Klobedanz (1.1 innings 2 hits 2 runs).

Rudy Sutko (7-5) got the win.

Washington came back to take game two 4-3.

Gene Hutton reached on an error in the first inning and scored on Ron Shaw's two run blast off Sutko.

Los Angeles scored its first run in the 5th on a double by John Booty and then tied the game 2-2 in the 6th on a double by Art Dozier, a singled by Rich Hershberger, and a ground out by Jimmy Else.

A two run 8th inning put Washington ahead once again 4-2.

Maxcy walked with one out, stole second off Bowen. Rookie Arlie Roenicke was greeted by Hutton with a single that scored Maxcy, Copeland drew a walk, and Huttin scored on a ground out.

Los Angeles scored one run in the bottom of the eighth to make it a one run game but got no closer.

Chris Bumbry got the win and is now 4-1 all the decision coming over the last seven games.

Cookie Layton pitched the final one and two-thirds innings allowing no runs on one hit, one walk, one strikeout.

Shoji Iwai started for Washington (6 innings 5 hits 2 runs).

Over the last nine Washington games Chris Bumbry has appeared in six of them pitching 9.1 innings allowed 8 hits 2 runs (both earned), walked 4 and struck out four. He has 4 wins, 1 loss and 1 save, an ERA of 1.91.

Washington 9 Los Angeles 6

Washington scored four late runs to pull away from Los Angeles and win the rubber game of this series two games to one by a 9-6 score.

Dan Ainsmith, Los Angeles starting pitcher, was touched up for three first inning runs. Ainsmith walked Dan Johnson and Tom Ragland with no one out and then with two outs Ron Shaw hit a three run homerun, his 6th of the season.

Larry Stennett cut into that lead in the second inning with a solo homerun for Los Angeles.

3-1 Washington.

Gene Hutton singled to center field, stole second. Fletcher Meche walked. Johnson forced Meche at second. Ragland singled in Hutton.

4-1 Washington.

Bottom of the fourth...Art Dozier singled to left field.. Paul Benavedas walked. Jay Corsi ground into a 6-4-3 double play with Doxier moving to third base and scoring on a single by John Hooper.

Washington replied to that run with one more in the top of the 5th scored by Jay Tolson reached on an error by third baseman Art Dozier.

5-2 Washington.

Los Angeles took a 6-5lead in bottom the bottom of the 5th inning with a four run outburst that was partially off starter Fletcher Meche.

Pitcher Arlie Roenicke singled. Meche walked Jimmy Else. Larry Gray hit a three run homerun. John Hopper added a second two out run scoring single.

Joshia White got the final out of the inning.

Washington put two runs on the board in the 7th to take a 7-6 lead.

Pinch hitter Bobby Moreland hit a solo homer (5th) off Roeneick to knock him out of the game.

His replacement, Danny Fine allowed a single to Larry Maxcy, walked Gene Hutton, and gave up a run scoring single to pinch hitter Ricky Beck.

7-6 Washington.

Washington tacked on two more in their last at bat in the top of the ninth.

Maxcy hit a solo homerun, his 6th this season, and Johnny Deleon singled and scored run number nine for Washington on a single by catcher Tom Ragland.

Final 9-6 Washington.

Washington has won seven of its last ten. The win kept Washington one game in front of the Anaheim Gold who won their second straight as well.
