Baseball scores and summaries

In what has been a season of daily changes on teams, and in the standings, more are seemingly on the way.

There were no trades made but winnings streaks have poised some teams for an upward move.

Arizona (25-18) currently on a four game win streak with its 6-2 well earned victory over last place Pittsburgh. The win moved into a tie at the top with Chicago for first place.

Starting pitcher Dave Steib went nine innings giving up two runs on four hits walking one and striking out six.

Steib got six runs of support on just five hits during the game.

Devon White's three run double in the third inning staked the Puggys a 3-0 lead.

Gus Baldwin hit a three run homerun in the 3rd that doubled the lead. 6-0.

Hal Reis (LP 0-2) was knocked out after two innings allowed four hits six runs five walks and just one strikeout.

Pittsburgh broke up the shutout with two runs in the 5th inning on a single by Bill Miller.

Brooklyn 5 Montreal 4

Brooklyn has the longest active win streak in the league after their 5-4 win over slumping Montreal.

Marty Maas (5-4) went 8 innings allowed 6 hits three runs (earned) walked three struck out three.

Hugh Bitker gave up an unearned run in the ninth but earned his 8th save.

Dave Berry hit his 6th homerun of the season in the 2nd inning with two outs and no one on off Tyson Roggenbuck.

Milwaukee 5 San Francisco 1

A pair of clubs down in the standings did battle with Milwaukee emerging with a 5-1 win.

Ed Marshall went four for four for the winners. Jim Osbourne scored two runs, one on his first homerun of the season off Tim Castellana. Osbourne also scored on a single 2nd inning single by Gerry Leonard.

Philadelphia at Chicago series............

Philadelphia had split their series three games each going into this series. Each team had taken two of three on the other team's field.

Philadelphia took the series lead 4-3 with this 7-1 victory.

Bud Thevenow on notice to win or go to the bullpen won his third game in eight decisions. Thevenow went the distance allowing just one run on five hits.

Thevenow, a twenty six year old right hander, did not allow a base runner of any kind until he walked Ben Konuszewski leading off the 3rd inning.

Chicago's first hit came with one out in the 5th inning. Lou Thornberry singled but was erased in a 6-4-3 double play hit into by Konuszewski.

Hocking, a former Philadelphia prospect who was traded away, gave up the first two Philadelphia in the 6th inning.

Charlie Scheer singled singled with two outs and Steve Elmore hit a two run homerun, his second of the season.

2-0 Philadelphia.

Philadelphia added on three more runs in the eighth.

A throwing error by second baseman Konuszewski put the A's pitcher, Thevenow, on second base with no outs.

Dots Pedrique replaced Hocking.

Pedrique walked Roy Jones and Charlie Scheer singled to center field.

Elmore climaxed a five RBI game with a bases loaded double that cleared the bases.

Rich Landesberger gave up two more runs in the 9th inning. Pinch hitter John Pitkovec singled leading off the ninth. Pinch hitter Curt Johnson, making his first plate appearance since being recalled from AAA, doubled home Pitkovec. Philadelphia's third straight pinch hitter, Andy Holloway also singled scoring Johnston.

Wayne Clark hit a solo homerun for Chicago in the bottom of the 9th, his 5th.

Final 7-1 Philadelphia.
