The race is own in the American League. Five teams (Brooklyn, Chicago, Arizona, and Montreal have taken turns holding down the top spot. Those five teams have waged a fierce battle all season for dominance finding themselves red hot one week and cooling off the next.
Arizona and Brooklyn are currently tied for first with 29-23 records.
Brooklyn mauled the San Francisco Giants 14-0. Don Berry and Will Wegman had three hits and each homered in the game for Brooklyn as did Don Needham.
Will Wegman hit a grand slam homerun in the 4th inning, his 8th, off Dennis Spencer, to put Brooklyn up 5-0. Curt Torborg, who scored on the grand slam, had singled in a run earlier in the inning.
Berry hit his homer in the 6th inning off Spencer, to make the score off Ray Betcher.
Don Needham hit a two run homer in the 9th off Little Joe Crockett to up the run support to 14 runs on 14 hits.
Marty Maas went eight shutout innings allowing four hits for the win (7-2).
Dave Howell finished it for Maas, no save.

Philadelphia reached the .500 mark (26-26 with this win and it three behind the leaders tied with Montreal for fourth place.
Isiah Deleon went eight innings, six hits one earned run three walks and seven strikeouts.
Maze Bosley earned his 10th save with a scoreless ninth.
Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning on George Voss (9th) homerun off DeLeon.
The top of the 5th inning saw Philadelphia tie the game up at 1-1.
Charlie Scheer walked. Deleon sacrificed bunted him to second base. Pitkovec popped out. Shortstop Lenny Gassaway singled to right field driving in Scheer tying the game 1-1.
Philadelphia took the lead in the 8th.
McCollough reached on an error by center fielder Ed Marshall. Perezchica flied to center and Blakely fanned but Steve Elmore drew a big two out walk binging Scheer to the plate.
''When I drew that walk earlier it helped me see the ball better looking at the pitches come in and I really was able to put a good swing on that ball that fortunately for us went out.''
Scheer hit his 3rd of the season and the A's hope he has turned the corner with his bat.
