WAY too many Left Handed pitchers

March 12, 2003 at 04:02PM View BBCode

By a totally non-scientific count of all the scheduled starters against my team this season I've come to the above conclusion. There are 77 scheduled starts by LH SP against my team this year. Without doing a more in depth analysis team by team, I can safely say by looking at that number that it's WAY too high! Consider that the % of left handed people in the USA is somewhere between 5-15%, even less in the 50's when teachers undoubtedly would still force kids to use their right hands with the ruler. I think that ABE must be letting people's drafting preferences for LHP outweigh reality. Something to keep in mind for Dynasty Leagues as this is very unrealistic.

LOL, I liked that comment about teachers in the 50s! That was good.

Also, keep in mind you are only looking at the NL side. The number on the AL side at first glance, appears to be lower, but I will count and then post, just to make sure. Then we will have an almost "for sure" analysis of it.

My Count in the AL

I count 45 starts be LHP, which would be 27%, or what seems to have been almost exactly the norm in most leagues I've been in (including single season, MML, and the old Beta league).

The total % for both leagues would be 37%.

Does anyone know what the norm is now (since I think that is what the pitching aspect is modeled after) and also back in the 50s?

Again, I have no numbers for what it should be, but I would be happy to bring my lineup of LHP slayers into your league. :D

Here's how the arms (L or R) and bats (L, B, or R) are determined when players are created:

When I randomly select a player first name from my list of all MLB players through 2000, I take whatever his attributes are for those things as well. So it should be pretty accurate, maybe even lower than it should be since more pitchers are left handed than position players and I don't account for that distinction.

Additionally, this is why a SS can be left handed, the position is determined randomly and not tied to the hand of the player (possible enhancement there).

Had a little extra time on my hands and wanted to pursue this a bit further for my own curiousity.
So, on Major League rosters in Beta as of now (Mar 17, 1:41 Pm PST) there are 54 LH pitchers out of 160 total - 33.8%
In the minors there are 34 LH pitchers out of 117 total - 29%.
On the waiver wire there are 27 LHP out of 98 total - 27.5%.
Total LHP in Beta League - 115 out of 375 - 31%.
In the REAL Major Leagues as of right now there are 115 LHP out of 419 (on major league rosters, not including minors) - 27.4%
In 1955 the 16 major league teams used 84 LHP out of a total of 280 - 30%.

So, we're actually doing pretty darn good in total numbers as compared to the era that we're simulating!

Great post, Geoffrey. I thought your initial theory was right -- that there was too many LHP. Of course I had nothing to back that up -- now that you've compiled the number it looks like we're pretty much on target. Excellent research.
