As long as we're experimenting,...

November 22, 2004 at 02:21PM View BBCode

I figure I might as well experiment with the make up of the team, also. We got a lucky draft and are racking up W's with a lot of regularity.

The experiment I'd like to try is to accumulate hitters with high contact ratings (A- or better) and lower power ratings (C+ to B+). Good speed would be a plus. I could trade some power hitters.

Anybody got a deal in mind?

Just make sure you don't make all the deals with the same team. The biggest thing we are trying to test is competitive balance and I would hate to see multiple lopsided trades affect this test. It could push the regular site back 6 months from getting these changes if the test is tainted.

If we are testing competitive balance, maybe I should be replaced, I am TOO DAMN GOOD !!!

Just kidding. I am a little concerned about the mentoring stuff and how it will affect the long term makeup of a team. What letter grade would be equivalent to the current OS improvement system? B-?

I don't intend for the trades to be lopsided.

A high C+

Also, do the chances go up the more a guy pitches? I think this question is mainly for RP's.

Yes, the more a player plays, the more improvement chances he will get. Is that what you mean?

Yes. So when I get a mentoring grade of B, that only goes to the guys that actually pitched that game. Correct?

Yes

Hmm, I think I might see a way to cheat a little. It's too late to test now, but I'll try it next year.

Please elaborate :)

Let me see if I understand this thread.

We're talking only about RP's.
The RP mentoring grade for each game is the average of the mentoring grades for THE RP's WHO ACTUALLY PITCHED IN THAT GAME.

If that is the case, the 1st guy out of the pen everyday should be your RP with the highest mentoring grade regardless of the situation.

If it's not already the case, the mentoring grade for starters and relievers each day should the the average of the SP's and RP's on the staff with no regard to who actually pitches that day.

Help me understand exactly what happens.

Actually, the way I was interepreting that is that the RP mentor grade would always be the same -- assuming you made no roster changes -- for each game, but it would only be APPLIED, in terms of improvement chances, to players who pitched in that game.

NO - THAT IS NOT CORRECT.

The mentoring grade has an EFFECT on the improvement chances for any RP that appear in the game.

Oh, and by the way, I think the point about "experimentation" in the beta league at this point is that what we're now primarily experimenting with is how competitive balance will play out with the mentoring system. So this really isn't the time or place for the "Let's see what happens if go with all high-contact speed guys" throughout the lineup or "My team's so good I think I'll give other guys a chance". This league, for the time being, has to be played "for real".

I'm trying to get this right regarding RP mentoring grade and we get some posts that are a little conflicting. So,...

A) The RP mentoring grade ffor your team is the average of the mentoring grades of the RP's on your staff for that game.

B) The pitchers who pitch in the game have their offseason chances modified by that grade.

C) The RP mentoring grade will only change if there is a change in the bullpen staff.

Point is taken on other experimentation.

The range (representing game-calling skills) and age of the starting catcher for the game is factored in, too.

Breaking in a rookie catcher could get expensive.

Only if you're breaking in rookie pitchers at the same time...

A manager paying close attention could put the vet catcher in when rookies are scheduled to start and the rookie catcher in when vets are scheduled to start...

In my opinion the veteran catcher is making just a small difference. I have been starting a 35 y.o. catcher with B range, and I am consistently getting D+ mentoring for my starters. My starting staff age/Tot are: 28/A, 23/A-, 27/B+, 25/B+, and 31/B. When my 26 year old catcher with A- range starts then the SP mentoring drops D+ to D. Also, the RP mentor grade dropped from B to C+.

Sounds about right. A 38 year old catcher with A range would probably push you to C-.

Or if you beat a team ahead of you in the standings, you'll get a bump for that game.

so I'm guessing my 22 yeard old catcher with D range isn't doing my pitchers any justice?
