300,000 for a minor league contract. The Mets would have given him 5 times as much as announced him as their opening day closer.

Maybe he speaks Korean as well as Japanese and they're hoping he'll help balance Kim... It seems less and less likely they'll dump Kim's contract. Yeah, this deal is strange. Maybe they think he'll fill some specific roll, like maybe he has something they think Jeter can't hit - that'd be worth 300K for the Sox ;)

It's a $300,000 minor league contract. Its not like they gave him this huge long term deal. My guess is that they are trying to establish a relationship with the players over in Japan. So when the next Ichiro or Hideki Matsui comes out they will have a good shot at him.

Damn, I didn't even think of that. Thats probably exactly where they are heading this.

30 saves over 13 seasons... and they want to put that in the headline?

It's Epstein, you know the kid who copies everything Billy Beane does? Maybe you didn't notice, but Beane signed a 37 year old Japanes pitcher recently. Epstein is just trying to copy him.

Beane never signed Schilling, or won a World Series...

Relationships are overrated. The only thing they need - and they already have it - to have a good relationship with any foreign club or player is money.

Yea but that doesn't work when the Yankees have more of it. When you live to compete with the Yankees you need to pull out all the stops.

Yeah, I guess it was kinda over the top... Sorry. But it really isn't that stupid. He got him for cheap and he could be an innings eater in the bullpen. I don't know about his stats or anything, but maybe he was acquired to make a spot start or two if Schilling is out to start the season. (as I heard he probably would be)

Actually Skiers post makes perfect sense. The Yanks do have more money than anyone. and Boston does live to compete with the Yanks, or am I mistaken?

you are mistaken. Past owners and GMs' had been known to do business that way put not this one. They don't make reactionary moves to what the Yankees do. If a move is made it is because they felt it was best for the team and not because Bill Beane or Stienbrener made a similar move.

And best for the team would be beating the Yankees. They both share the same goal... win at all costs. And that usually means that they have to go through the other to get there. Therefore everything the Sox do is to try and get one up on the Yankees and vice versa. Why did the Sox go out and get Curt Schilling last year? Because initially the Yankees wanted him but more importantly they felt that he could put them over the top and win a World Series. And the only way that they could do that was to go through the Yankees. The same goes for why the Yankees went out and got Randy Johnson.

Rather than imbed 17,000 quotes, I'd like to return to skier's post, and point out one glaring error: obviously, one mustn't need to "pull out all the stops" in order to compete with the Yankees. One may just count on them to author the greatest choke job in sports history. The Red Sox didn't outspend them last year, and they ended up winning a title, after all.

P.S. Yankees suck, Red Sox suck, and someone else will win the World Series this year.

Jetpac: You're a punk.

Tim: You're a comedian.

Obviously, someone from the NL will beat either the Yanks or Sox in the World Series. Early favorites include Atlanta and St. Louis. We'll see. Maybe even the Mets ( )

Ah but you missed my point. Initially I said that this contract might be a way to try and develop a relationship over in Japan in order to put them in a good position when the next Ichiro or Hideki Matsui comes out. Then Abarkov said that you don't need to develop a relationship, all you need is money. That's when my above statement came into play. If it was as simple as money then it wouldn't even be a contest because the Yankees can outspend anyone.

Then the debate about what the Red Sox philosophy is began. Drew commented on that statement and while I was refering to the foreign free agent market the same applies here. The Red Sox live to compete with the Yankees and the Yankees live to compete with the Red Sox. And while the Red Sox didn't have to outspend the Yankees (although they also spent enough to buy a small country) their moves clearly are an attempt to get over the Yankees in their quest to win the World Series. And it is pretty hard to deny that when the players they acquire make statements about wanting to beat the Yankees and not being able to wait and make 60,000 Yankee fans shut up like Curt Schilling said.
