Boston Red Sox: The Red Sox on Tuesday signed first baseman Roberto Petagine to a one-year, $750,000 contract, ESPN's Peter Gammons has learned.

Petagine, who in his brief major league career played for Houston, Cincinnati, the New York Mets and San Diego for parts of five seasons, has played the last five years for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan. Last season, he went .291 with 29 homers.

Petagine, 33, is a left-handed hitter and an excellent defensive first baseman who will try to take the place of Doug Mientkiewicz, recently traded to the Mets.

I wonder what that means for David McCarty... Did they sign him for '05?

The talked him out of retirement to take a minor league deal. He will be offered a job as a minor league coach if he doesn't make the cut.

I'd say it's safe to say McCarty will not make the team. He might have a chance as a pitcher...
