Blockbuster trades in Beta League

Having opened a big lead in the NL, the Brooklyn Bums made two big trades recently in an effort to boost their pitching staff for their run to become the first World Champions in the Beta League.

Their first trade was a swap of starting pitchers with the Cleveland Tribe. The Bums picked up veteran righty Walt Hasegawa in exchange for 18 year-old right-hander Whitey Candini. Hasegawa, the 5th round pick of the Tribe, is 9-9 with a 3.07 ERA. He paid immediate dividends for the Bums, going 1-0 with a 2.08 in 2 starts. The young Candini is 9-5 with a 7.32 ERA so far this year, and has a bright future ahead of him.

In the second big trade, the Bums picked up 36 year-old ace pitcher Gail Andrews along with reliever Jesus Bickford from the Chicago Gangsters. Andrews, the Gangsters 1st round pick, is a Cy Young candidate, going 13-4 with a 2.53 ERA this year. Gail was brilliant in his first start for the Bums, pitching 8 shutout innings to get the win. Bickford will fill the setup roll for the Bums, and is 1-0 in 3 appearances with his new team, holding his opponents scoreless over 2 1/3 innings.

The Gangsters made this deal with an eye to the future, picking up power-hitting 1B Mike Kirby, 22 year-old reliever Phil Scarborough, and the Bumsā?? top prospect, 17-year old 3B Joe Mason. Kirby is hitting .388 this year, with 5 HR and 22 RBI. Scarborough is 1-2 with 2 saves and a 5.28 ERA. Mason is a ā??canā??t missā?? prospect and has spent the year in the minors where he has progressed rapidly. Heā??ll be manning the Gangstersā?? hot-corner for years to come.

That was a hell of a trade, wasn't it? And immediately afterward, we jump up three slots in the standings...I won't complain :)
