Berkman signs deal with Astros

6 years, $85 million. Berkman was going to be a FA after this season. $14 mil a year may be a little too much, especially because Berkman is 29, but a pretty good deal nonetheless

At least they managed to make sure they keep someone beyond this year, because they are going to have a lot of retirements after this season.

in real baseball 29 isn't that old. Playes don't automatically start to decline at 34 like here. I notice that more and more players are going strong into their late 30s'

With the new steroid awareness and regulations that might stop though. A lot of the best players in their late thirties have been suspected of steroid use.

You mean MLB players don't get improvement chances?! (In other words, thanks for being a condescending ass, bub).

Actually, most players DO begin to decline as they get deeper into their 30s. Look at an elite player like Robbie Alomar, whose career went in the toilet once he hit 34. Now older players are going to have to maintain a high level of performance WITHOUT the benefit of steroids.

Berkman has shown he's a good player, but he's not elite. A 6-year contract is too long for ANY player age 29. The Astros (or whichever sucker GM trades for him when Houston finds they need to dump his contract) will regret this contract when Berkman is grabbing $14 mil a year as a hobbled 34-year-old.

The Astros will trade him within the next 3 years when they realize they suck without all their old players, probably to the Mets for a future stud pitcher. Book it, Dan-O. Sorry. I've always wanted to say that.

Berkman also blew out his knee in the offseason which could have big effects on the length of his career. He probably won't be able to play CF now and the departure of Beltran leaves Houston without a true CF.
