I know this topic has been discussed many times, and that it is a recognized "problem", with lots of ideas for a solution, but no easy one right away.May 29, 2003 at 03:32PM View BBCode
Bill James/Baseball Prospectus reguarly write about players having their "year 27" peak season. Not every player, but if you take all players in aggregate. The decline is gradual and builds over time, of course. I'll try to find some recent articles. Last years BP had a big write up.May 29, 2003 at 03:33PM View BBCode
I think the current settings are pretty realistic. Players improve in the minors from age 17 to 21 or so and then continue to improve in the majors from age 21 to 26. At 27 to 33, they are in their prime. The only issue I have is that players seem to fall off big time at 34 to 35 and then they retire. If it was more random (guys not improving much as kids, some players declining earlier or later) it would be great but I have no major problem with the current set-up.May 29, 2003 at 03:41PM View BBCode
well clearly things could be better. different categories should be tied to age independantly. For pitchers velocity should decline 1st, then endurance, then lastly control. For batters first would be speed, then range, then contact and arm, and finally power.June 03, 2003 at 04:03AM View BBCode
Yeah look how much Clemens velocity has dropped. Jamie Moyer at 40 is certainly in major decline. It's dependant on the person and while there is a general trend nothing is absolute. Brett Boone has blossomed AFTER he turned 32. Some peak at 24. Some come in as say as A Vel, C+ contol. The Mariners "Little Unit" Ryan Anderson and where is he now. Pitching but after 3 years or so. About as close to the majors as he was right out of high school. Tyson has a pretty good set up. Possibilities exist for everyone until they retire. The odds are less as they should be. Maybe if some young player just has an abnormally super year his chances for improvement might be boosted by a small percent. Or if a guy gets hurt alot he will suffer. Tyson could write anything into the game but as is it's pretty awesome and still runs good, fast and is fun.June 03, 2003 at 05:26AM View BBCode
I'm not so sure about your take on speed Doug. Obviously speed does decline first, but with speed being directly related to the amount of stolen bases and base running it seems that maybe speed would hold steady for a bit longer, at least until a separate "base running" or "base stealing" ability is added.Pages: 1
