The Message Board Jinx

April 09, 2002 at 01:55PM View BBCode

What would baseball be without a little superstition?

Early in the season I mentioned my star pitcher Rey Konsuszewski had gone 17-2/3 innings without an earned run... And he stalls.

I mention my 14-0 stud pitcher Ken Elliot, and he doesn't win in his next 4 starts.

Then, I innocently mention that my Joe McCarthy league goats are in first place, and they lose 3 in a row. Now my best player, Will Whitehead, is out for 15 days with an injury.

It's the curse of the message board! Be careful what you post! It's like the Sports Illustrated cover thing.

Yea, Tyson reads the messages and fixes what what you mention in the message. If it is a pitcher who has a long winning streak, he makes sure he looses. If it is a long time running hitter, he fixes it so he goes 0 for 5. So don't say anything. Especially the Washington Thundercats in the beta league...they are almost in the basement!

(Note to self - Sparks is on to me. Make sure Thundercats have a lousy 1953 draft.)

I love a good conspiracy theory, so I'd be happy to blame Tyson for my Beta Goats woes as well...

On the other hand, I think it's because my short stop hasn't be touching home plate on the way to his position every game like he used to...

When I was a pitcher, I had a deal where the third baseman had to bring me the ball after they tossed it around the horn to start the inning, he couldn't throw it to me. I don't know why, I'm just a freak. It didn't work, by the way, I still led the league in giving up tape measure home runs...

Speaking of superstitions

When I was playing (LF) in High School and 2 years college (before they had DH's in the majors) I would always be the last player out of the dugout and would always touch 3rd base as I went to my position. After I got to the college level, I always made sure my bat was under my bed at night (it was RARELY out of my sight - Ted Williams Louisville Slugger). I finished the 2 years HS and 2 years college with a .425 batting average overall but for the life of me I COULD NOT CATCH A FLY BALL SO THE SCOUTS NEVER LOOKED AT ME but very few balls got past me and I had a very good arm. I later found the problem was my vision...something about paralex (?) :( I did go on to later become a batting coach for all the USAF base teams where I was stationsed and 2 different industrial leagues...I just never played again after college...no time to devote to the game...no regrets though. Have a wonderful wife and 2 fine sons...one is playing at the industrial level now. The other works with me at MS.
