Initial Draft Talent Levels

August 31, 2005 at 04:37PM View BBCode

Based on your feedback, I did some research at the talent levels that the ST League ended up in 1963. My conclusion is that we are a bit high for the initial draft talent levels, and a bit on the young side as well.

I've done some major number crunching on the batters, and have made some tweaks to the talent pool makeup for the initial drafts compared to what we have been using in Beta. In general, the pool will be a bit older and a bit less talented.

For example, the ST league currently has 34 batters that are 36 years old or older. The initial draft only had 15 who were 35 and older. I've done some shuffling to make these numbers a bit closer.

I'm going to start looking at pitchers next.

One other minor point on this. I'd rather error on the side of the draft being a little too talentless than being a little too talented.

The way its set up now, its fairly easy to make adjustments if we want to pump up or down the talent based on what happens with leagues. So if we find that the first private league that uses this ends up with some inflation, I can bump up the initial draft talent for future leagues.

Ok, for pitchers I found that we were a few pitchers short on both the younger and older ranges. So there will be a couple more 17-18 year olds, and more guys in the older age groupings as well.

There wasn't a ton of movement talent wise. Some of the A+ and D+ players were eliminated for certain age groups, and in general I'd say the talent is a bit weaker with the changes, but batter talents changed more.

If this helps any, my observation is that I've never seen a player as talented as Harry Gilbert (Boston) in ST Beta, either in an initial draft, an offseason draft or someone who just developed through the years. Gilbert came in as an A+ 20-year-old and he hit .389 last season as 34-year-old. I've never seen a player that good in any of my other leagues. In fact, I can't remember seeing an A+ player, ever.

I'd actually like to see a few more players like Gilbert. Once a decade per league seems about right. As it is, he was kind of a Ted Williams with health, and right now I'd say you can't find or develop a player that good in the dynasty/private leagues.

What could explain the off year that Gilbert had in 1953? Did the pitching just get really strong that year, or was it something like putting him in a bad spot in the order? Strange season considering all the other ones.
