Carswell's car

November 17, 2005 at 12:30AM View BBCode

So you heard about Dwayne Carswell, the Denver Broncos lineman who was seriously injured in a car crash a couple of weeks ago. Terrible story.

But did you hear what kind of car he was driving?

A 1994 Chevrolet Caprice.

What is he, a middle-aged woman from New Jersey?

The guy has been in the NFL for more than a decade, so you know he has the cash. A '94 Caprice just blows my mind.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, [url=http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/13015274.htm]here's the story.[/url]

Does he make league minimum? I got to talking to this bouncer the other night who played offensive line for the Seahawks back in the early 90's who played for league minimum (He played for the UT team that lost to Miami in the in the championship game). If there was one message he conveyed during that conversation it was money is very easy to spend when you make league minimum in the NFL. That and almost everyone was taking steroids.

It was not a stock caprice by any means, I saw pictures when they showed the wreck on ESPN. He had it all fixed up and a unfortunately a 94 caprice is a very popular car to "pimp out" it is essentially the same car as the impala SS from 94-96 which was a very sweet car.

Chad Johnson has a lot of nice cars that he used to drive around but now keeps in miami but here in NKY/Cincy he drives around in a stock Buick.

Give some dumb jock who didn't finish college a quarter of a million dollars (that's about what the league minimum is) and see how fast he can spend it. When I hear about these guys who played pro sports...even if they only did it for a year or two...and now they're broke, I have no pity.

When you consider the joys of compound interest, any idiot making a quarter-mill at age 22 or 23 ought to have a really sweet retirement plan put away...even after taxes. It's not like he'll never have to work again. But if he does a one-time lump sum $50K investment in his retirement account at age 23, by the time he's 60 he's got half a million dollars to retire on. That assumes a fairly modest 6% annual return on his money.

I forget what great thinker said it, but it's true: What you acquire to easily, you esteem too lightly. And besides, who needs to invest money when there's cars, booze, coke, clothes, and women to be bought.

I think in New York the interest rate for a savings account is a tenth of a percent, pathetic...

Well, I'm assuming that no one would really have their retirement account "invested" in passbook savings.:puzzled:
